    Summary
    National Facility for Electron Spin Correlations and Spintronics. Conventional electronics is based on coupling the charge of the electrons with external electric fields and light. Recent work on spintronics is directed toward the use of both the spin (angular momentum) and the charge degrees of freedom of the electron. We currently lead the world in the development of spin-resolved coincidence measurements, which make it possible to determine previously inaccessible nanoscale magnetic propertie .... Recent work on spintronics is directed toward the use of both the spin (angular momentum) and the charge degrees of freedom of the electron. We currently lead the world in the development of spin-resolved coincidence measurements, which make it possible to determine previously inaccessible nanoscale magnetic properties, central to 'spintronic structure engineering'. State-of-the-art instrumentation is requested to characterise the magnetic and crystallographic structure, the adsorbates, and the lateral distribution and depth profile of fabricated zero, one and two-dimensional structures.

    Investigation of vertical magneto-transport in infrared detector structures based on InAs/GaSb type-II superlattices. Infrared sensors and systems are finding increasing use in Australia's core industries: particularly defence, mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, homeland security, and medical diagnostics. Due to the reduced cooling requirements, the Infrared detector structures to be investigated in this project have the potential to deliver high performance in .... Infrared sensors and systems are finding increasing use in Australia's core industries: particularly defence, mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, homeland security, and medical diagnostics. Due to the reduced cooling requirements, the Infrared detector structures to be investigated in this project have the potential to deliver high performance infrared technology at a significantly lower cost and, hence, widening its applications. The new science proposed in this project, and new technological knowledge expected from its application, will allow Australian researchers to participate and significantly contribute to the international effort in this field and to exploit any developed intellectual property.

Adaptive, resonant optoelectronics technologies will create new industries and enable, for the first time, advanced, low-cost, hand-held, spectroscopic systems for chemical/biological/process sensing for industries as diverse as food processing to pharmaceuticals manufacturing, portable biomedical diagnostics, and precision agriculture. The technologies will enhance Australia's ability to address defence and security needs related to surveillance, chemical/biological threat monitoring, border protection, and target identification.

    Nano-scale modification of gold surfaces for sensing mercury from gaseous effluents of alumina refineries. The Australian alumina industry contributes more than $5.4 billion export income annually. It is also a major driver of the rural economy with all but one of Australia's seven alumina refineries located in rural areas. In response to the industry's attempts to reduce the environmental impact of its processes, this project will conduct basic strategic research into the interaction between m .... Nano-scale modification of gold surfaces for sensing mercury from gaseous effluents of alumina refineries. The Australian alumina industry contributes more than $5.4 billion export income annually. It is also a major driver of the rural economy with all but one of Australia's seven alumina refineries located in rural areas. In response to the industry's attempts to reduce the environmental impact of its processes, this project will conduct basic strategic research into the interaction between mercury vapour and gold surfaces at the nano-level. Our principal aim is to develop mercury sensor technology suited to alumina refineries. This innovative technology will be a significant breakthrough in the control of mercury emissions and have many other applications.

Possible applications include high-speed .... Visualizing spin-related properties of functional nanostructures (for spintronics). This project contributes to undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral research and training to encourage the pursuit of excellence, with: - increased depth of knowledge in interdisciplinary research, - a scientific environment providing access to research not otherwise in Australia, - experience in the design, construction and development of scientific instruments. Possible applications include high-speed magnetic filters, sensors, quantum transistors and spin qubits for quantum computers. The technological aspects of our project's outcomes offer real prospects of local development. The development of spin-polarized electron spectroscopy has great potential for existing applications in the surface science industry.
