The Nanoscribe Photonic Professional GT2 Two-Photon 3D Printer enables tailoring materials’ architecture at nanoscale. This results in unique optical, mechanical, electrical, chemical, biochemical, and acoustic properties enabling a wealth of cutting-edge research activities in variety of fields including mechanical/optical/electrical metamaterials, bioinspired hard/soft materials, biomaterials (e.g., structured cell-tissue interfaces), biomedical devices (implantable devices and drug-delivery systems), nanofluidics, and photonic crystals. In each of these fields, we will use GT2 to print variety of polymers, hydrogels, metals and ceramics, for example by printing polymer-derived nanoceramics that will be simultaneously strong and tough.Read moreRead less
Novel solution processable carbon nanohybrids. Carbon nanomaterials have extraordinary electrical and mechanical properties but their processing into robust macroscopic structures is difficult. This project will develop innovative processing strategies to bring carbon nanohybrids a step closer to large scale applications, particularly in high-performance energy storage and conversion devices.

Conventional primers contain a mechanically-sensitive primary explosive that is used to detonate the more stable propellant in a bullet. This project aims to address the health and environmental impacts of heavy metals in current primers by replacing them with benign, electrically or optically activated silicon-based materials. Modern semiconductor fabrication techniques will be used to develop safe and clean primers through cost-effective doping and deposition protocols. The expected outcomes of the project include a sovereign primer manufacturing capability for Australia. This will provide a significant strategic advantage and health benefits for law enforcement and defence personnel during live fire training and firing range exercises.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop innovative techniques to produce advanced tungsten oxide/metal oxide/mica composites for paint applications. The findings will be used to develop pearlescent paints for diverse applications in a range of industries, with the potential for huge benefits in improving the value of metal oxides and mica. The findings will be useful in the development of other new materials and provide a foundation for new applications such as photochromic and self-cleaning paints. This will generate opportunities to develop and apply advanced knowledge to solve significant problems in industry, leading to national economic growth by adding high values of mineral resources in Australia.
