Musculoskeletal injuries sustained as a consequence of road traffic crashes are common and costly to the Australian community. Many people do not recover well after the injury but suffer ongoing pain and disability. The Centre for Research Excellence in Recovery Following Road Traffic Injury will target a clear need to improve health outcomes for injured individuals through research, capacity building and end-user engagement with a focus in primary care.

The Australian Centre of Excellence in Twin Research will build on the Australian Twin Registry, which for 30 years has played an integral part in health & medical research. The new Centre aims to expand a state-of-the-art resource for conducting research, bring together leading national and international researchers from across disciplines, and build capacity in people, techniques, and expertise to continue to enable twin research to address major health and medical issues.

Summary
Ineffective dosing of antimicrobials has contributed to the escalation of antimicrobial resistance which now pervades the healthcare system. Patients in the intensive care unit and post-transplant are examples of patients who commonly have infections, are more likely to fail treatment and have resistant microbes emerge. In these studies we will characterise the doses of antimicrobials that should be used in these difficult-to-treat patients and rapidly share these for routine clinical use.

One in five Australian children are already overweight or obese at age 5 years, by the time of school entry. Early childhood is a period when physical inactivity and poor eating habits become established and may persist life-long. We propose a Centre of Research Excellence in the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood. The Centre aims to reduce the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related behaviours in the first five years of life, and their future impact.

Our CRE is based on common respiratory conditions covering wide spectrum of ages and severity. We will investigate how to maintain optimal respiratory health, through innovative approaches to early detection, improved therapy and adherence. Despite intensive intervention some individuals with type 1 diabetes develop complications. There remains an urgent need for means to identify patients at risk of complications and new targets and therapies for preventing, arresting, treating and reversing them. The primary objective of the Diabetes Complications Centre of Research Excellence (DC-CRE) is to translate novel experimental findings into preventive/treatment strategies for the management of diabetes and its complications.

Each year in Australia 180,000 patients suffer a healthcare associated infection. Risk can be reduced with relatively simple technology but substantial costs arise with system wide adoption and monitoring. The economic paradigm is that funds can be invested for infection reduction to save costs and lives. The CRE will reveal the cost-effectiveness of infection control programmes and show health services decision-makers how to improve patient outcomes, save resources and save lives.
