    Understanding the basic biology of cells will allow us to pinpoint key mechanisms and molecules that underpin multiple diseases and are targets for treatments. The broad aims of this research program include the development of new therapies for chronic inflammatory diseases, understanding how proteins are sorted and trafficked inside cells in processes that are essential to immunity and cancer biology, and identifying new intracellular targets to block bacterial invasion and infectious diseases.

    My aim is to identify genes, biological molecules and environmental factors that causally affect risk of osteoporosis and ankylosing spondylitis (a form of autoimmune arthritis) using novel and existing statistical genetics methodologies. My research will advance understanding of the causes of these diseases, identify new opportunities for their treatment, and provide the scientific community with new statistical methods and software to identify factors that causally influence risk of disease.

    My laboratory is striving to understand how the patterns of neuronal connections form in the developing brain and how these underpin the functions of the brain throughout life. We use high-field magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain wiring and we investigate the genetic and environmental mechanisms causing developmental brain disorders that result in intellectual disability, autism, epilepsy and some mental illnesses.

    Despite advances made in understanding the mechanisms of liver injury, chronic liver disease continues to be one of the most rapidly growing causes of death in subjects aged <65 years. This is the result of uncontrolled wound healing and regeneration leading ultimately to cirrhosis and liver cancer. This research will identify and characterise pathways that control the wound healing response to liver injury, involving the processes of inflammation, scarring and restitution of normal liver mas ....     This fellowship aims to establish how viruses cause disease, including how they evade the immune response to persist and cause disease for prolonged periods. My vision is that knowing how the virus and the immune system interact to determine disease severity will assist in devising new treatments and prevention programs to lessen the impact of viral diseases in Australia and worldwide.
