Lake Mungo is known to Australians as the site of the world TMs earliest cremation and a window into our remote past. We will provide novel insights into the evolution of the Australian landscape, its fragile environment and the history of its resilient inhabitants.

This project will construct a computationally explicit model of movements in the solid Earth for the past 150 million years, to study the Earth as a complex system during the collision that produced the Alpine-Himalayan mountain belt. This is the youngest collisional mountain belt on Earth, and at times it stretched from Spain to New Zealand. Earth Scientists want to understand the processes that took place to mak .... The project will rely on high-resolution chronological records of environmental changes. Several geo .... The information is to be obtained from high-quality records of carefully selected lakes and deep-sea cores in the Australian region. The project will rely on high-resolution chronological records of environmental changes. Several geochemical and micropalaeontological techniques will be used to determine conditions in the lakes and ocean, and links to atmospheric conditions will be determined. This information is of relevance to the international climate community which aims at modelling high-quality and high-resolution records of climate change.

Trace element and volatile recycling in subduction zones is an integral part of the research theme 'Journey to the centre of the Earth' which has been identified as a key project (4.4) in the national strategic plan for geoscienc .... The results of this project will provide important constraints on the differentiation of Earth, which ultimately leads to the concentration of elements suitable for mining. Trace element and volatile recycling in subduction zones is an integral part of the research theme 'Journey to the centre of the Earth' which has been identified as a key project (4.4) in the national strategic plan for geosciences. CO2 recycling in subduction zones is crucial for our understanding of the long-term greenhouse gas variations on Earth. The ANU is one of the world-leading research institutions in experimental petrology and geochemistry, and the outcomes of this project will ensure that Australia remains at the forefront in these disciplines.

Accurate timekeeping is central to the environmental and archaeological sciences. Radiocarbon dating is the leading geochronological technique for events of the past 50,000 years, but the issue for sample contamination remains a major source of concern. Avoidance of contaminants can be achieved through the identification of specific biomolecular compounds that unambiguously formed part of the original sample, and the isolation of these biomolecules for radiocarbon dating using accelerator mass spectrometry. Here we request funds to establish Australia's first compound-specific radiocarbon dating facility, to obtain ages of high accuracy for key studies of climate and landscape change, evolutionary biology and archaeology.
