Abstract: We report on the experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in V and Λ energy level schemes using counterpropagating coupling and probe beam geometry. The observation was achieved using an acetylene photonic microcell. The conditions required for this observation are explored theoretically, and we show that the use of counterpropagating beams in electromagnetically induced transparency may have applications as a spectroscopic technique where velocity discrimination is desirable.

Light-shift spectroscopy of optically trapped atomic ensembles

Abstract: We develop a method for extracting the physical parameters of interest for a conventional dipole-trapped cold atomic ensemble. This technique uses the spatially dependent ac-Stark shift of the trap itself to project the atomic distribution onto a light-shift broadened transmission spectrum. We develop a model that connects the atomic distribution with the expected transmission spectrum. We then demonstrate the utility of the technique by deriving the temperature, trap depth, lifetime, and trapped atom number from data that was taken in a single shot experimental measurement.

Abstract: A frequency comb generated by a 167 MHz repetition frequency erbium-doped fiber ring laser using a carbon nanotube saturable absorber is phase-stabilized for the first time. Measurements of the in-loop phase noise show an integrated phase error on the carrier envelope offset frequency of 0.35 radians. The carbon nanotube fiber laser comb is compared with a CW laser near 1533 nm stabilized to the nu(1) + nu(3) overtone transition in an acetylene-filled kagome photonic crystal fiber reference, while the CW laser is simultaneously compared to another frequency comb based on a Cr:Forsterite laser. These measurements demonstrate that the stability of a GPS-disciplined Rb clock is transferred to the comb, resulting in an upper limit on the locked comb's frequency instability of 1.2 x 10(-11) in 1 s, and a relative instability of <3 x 10(-12) in 1 s. The carbon nanotube laser frequency comb offers much promise as a robust and inexpensive all-fiber frequency comb with potential for scaling to higher repetition frequencies.

Abstract: We report the observation of lambda-configuration electromagnetically induced transparency as well as optical pumping in rubidium-filled kagome-structure hollow-coated-core photonic crystal fiber. We show that a polydimethylsiloxane coating of the fiber core reduces the linewidth of the transparency below that which could be expected for an uncoated fiber. The measured 6 MHz linewidth was dominated by optical broadening.

Hertz-level frequency comparisons between diverse color lasers without a frequency comb

Abstract: We present a simple yet powerful technique to measure and stabilize the relative frequency noise between two lasers emitting at vastly different wavelengths. The noise of each laser is extracted simultaneously by a frequency discriminator built around an unstabilized Mach–Zehnder fiber interferometer. Our protocol ensures that the instability of the interferometer is canceled and yields a direct measure of the relative noise between the lasers. As a demonstration, we measure the noise of a 895 nm diode laser against a reference laser located hundreds of nm away at 1561 nm. We also demonstrate the ability to stabilize the two lasers with a control bandwidth of 100 kHz using a Red Pitaya and reach a sensitivity of 1 H z 2 / H z limited by detector noise. We independently verify the performance using a commercial frequency comb. This approach stands as a simple and cheap alternative to frequency combs to transport frequency stability across large spectral intervals or to characterize the noise of arbitrary color sources.

Coherent radio-frequency detection for narrowband direct comb spectroscopy

Abstract: We demonstrate a scheme for coherent narrowband direct optical frequency comb spectroscopy. An extended cavity diode laser is injection locked to a single mode of an optical frequency comb, frequency shifted, and used as a local oscillator to optically down-mix the interrogating comb on a fast photodetector. The high spectral coherence of the injection lock generates a microwave frequency comb at the output of the photodiode with very narrow features, enabling spectral information to be further down-mixed to RF frequencies, allowing optical transmittance and phase to be obtained using electronics commonly found in the lab. We demonstrate two methods for achieving this step: a serial mode-by-mode approach and a parallel dual-comb approach, with the Cs D1 transition at 894 nm as a test case.

Frequency stabilisation of a fibre-laser comb using a novel microstructured fibre

Abstract: There is great interest in developing high performance optical frequency metrology based around mode-locked fibre lasers because of their low cost, small size and long-term turnkey operation when compared to the solid-state alternative. We present a method for stabilising the offset frequency of a fibre-based laser comb using a 2 f - 3 f technique based around a unique fibre that exhibits strong resonant dispersive wave emission. This fibre requires lower power than conventional highly non-linear fibre to generate a suitable signal for offset frequency stabilisation and this in turn avoids the complexity of additional nonlinear steps. We generate an offset frequency signal from the mixing of a wavelength-shifted second harmonic comb with a third harmonic of the comb. Additionally, we have stabilised the repetition rate of the laser to a level better than 10(-14)/ radicaltau , limited by the measurement system noise floor.We present the means for complete and precise measurement of the transfer function of the laser frequency controls.

Optimal design for spectral narrowing and fast frequency sweep of an interferometer-stabilized laser

Abstract: Self-heterodyne fiber interferometers have been shown to be capable of stabilizing lasers to ultra-narrow linewidths and present an excellent alternative to high-finesse cavities for frequency stabilization. In addition to suppressing frequency noise, these devices are highly tunable and can be manipulated to produce high-speed frequency sweeps over the entire range of the laser. We present an analytic approach for choosing a delay-line length for both optimal noise suppression and highest in-loop frequency sweep rate. Based on this model, we stabilize an extended cavity diode laser to a fiber Michelson interferometer and demonstrate a linewidth of 700 Hz over millisecond timescales while also allowing for a frequency scan rate of 1 THz/s. We independently measure the maximum deviation from linearity of the sweep to be only 100 kHz.

Abstract: In this Letter, we present Fourier-transform-limited, nanosecond scale optical pulses from a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) using injection locking with a narrow-band seed laser. We examine two different injection-locking architectures and show that we can achieve an effective injection-locking range of over 8 GHz with an extinction ratio of 20,000:1. These results indicate that injection-locked VCSELs could become a key component of large-scale photonic quantum networks.

Fourth-order dispersion mediated solitonic radiations in HC-PCF cladding

Abstract: We observe experimentally, for the first time to our knowledge, the simultaneous emission of two strong conjugate resonant dispersive waves by optical solitons. The effect is observed in a small waveguiding glass feature within the cladding of a Kagome hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. We demonstrate theoretically that the phenomenon is attributed to the unusually high fourth-order dispersion coefficient of the waveguiding feature.

Generation and photonic guidance of multi-octave optical-frequency combs

Abstract: Ultrabroad coherent comb-like optical spectra spanning several octaves are a chief ingredient in the emerging field of attoscience. We demonstrate generation and guidance of a three-octave spectral comb, spanning wavelengths from 325 to 2300 nanometers, in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The waveguidance results not from a photonic band gap but from the inhibited coupling between the core and cladding modes. The spectrum consists of up to 45 high-order Stokes and anti-Stokes lines and is generated by driving the confined gas with a single, moderately powerful (10-kilowatt) infrared laser, producing 12-nanosecond-duration pulses. This represents a reduction by six orders of magnitude in the required laser powers over previous equivalent techniques and opens up a robust and much simplified route to synthesizing attosecond pulses.

Abstract: We report the fabrication and characterization of a new type of hollow-core photonic crystal fiber based on large-pitch (approximately 12 microm) kagome lattice cladding. The optical characteristics of the 19-cell, 7-cell, and single-cell core defect fibers include broad optical transmission bands covering the visible and near-IR parts of the spectrum with relatively low loss and low chromatic dispersion, no detectable surface modes and high confinement of light in the core. Various applications of such a novel fiber are also discussed, including gas sensing, quantum optics, and high harmonic generation.
