Abstract: This article examines the process of rehabilitation through Wendy Seymour's concept of re-embodiment and Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus. It argues that rehabilitation practitioners need to focus not only on the damaged body of the patient, but also on the patient's subjective experiences of health and illness and the wider social context in which they occur. The process of disembodiment caused by periods of injury or sickness creates a rupture in the ordinary experience of the in idual in society. In doing so, it renders both the in idual habitus and ordinary societal conceptions problematic. In iduals must then embark on a process of transformation or identity reconstruction, whereby they again come to understand themselves as “healthy”. As rehabilitation workers are likely to work closely with people over an extended period of time, they are in an excellent position to consider the person not just as an objective patient, but as a person or subject influenced by many overlapping social forces and relationships that have an impact upon their reconstitution of identity, their rehabilitation and re-embodiment. Thus, rehabilitation as re-embodiment offers an opportunity for both the patient and practitioner to reconsider themselves and their place in society, and in doing so, to effect social change both within themselves and society at large.

Abstract: This article aims to identify barriers to implementing waste management practices in construction projects and their interrelationship, based on the particular context of Australia. Interviews and a questionnaire survey were conducted as the primary data collection methods supported by the findings of a charrette. The findings reveal twenty critical barriers to implementing waste management practices in Australian construction projects. Four underlying factors that impede waste management practices are extracted based on results of an exploratory factor analysis. These include rigidity of construction practices, construction project characteristics, awareness, experience and commitment, and the nascent nature of waste management. The study also finds that while both human factors and technical factors act as barriers to implementing waste management practices in Australian construction projects, human factors are more dominant. Thus, it is essential to address all these barriers in the early stage of construction projects for reducing waste generation.

Abstract: one-level hypothetical model was formulated to explore factors that influenced the self-reported readiness of workplace managers to engage in workplace (vocational) rehabilitation of past-injured workers attending their workplaces. Seven supervisor latent variables were considered, using 270 supervisors self-rated self-efficacy measures, estimating their ability to pursue four related roles associated with vocational rehabilitation in the workplace. Models identifying supervisor self-efficacy pathways leading to their readiness to engage in vocational rehabilitation in their workplaces were tested using Partial Least Square Analysis (PLSPATH). The study's outcomes suggest that supervisor readiness to engage in workplace vocational rehabilitation with rehabilitating employees can be directly associated with four variables. Together, these variables accounted for 41 per cent of the variance of the supervisors' self-efficacy scores, defining their readiness to engage in workplace vocational rehabilitation. Significant predictors which had a direct influence on supervisor readiness to engage in vocational rehabilitation were: their perceived financial and liaison roles associated with vocational rehabilitation and their concern with meeting legal aspects of this process. The capacity of the supervisor to interact with others within the workplace organisation when engaging in vocational rehabilitation was also seen as a significant determinant of their readiness to engage in rehabilitation activities. The gender of the supervisor or the number of employees for whom the supervisor was responsible for, were found to have no significant influence on their self-efficacy levels. Statistically significant supervisory readiness to engage in vocational workplace rehabilitation is subject to their self-rated abilities to undertake multiple roles involved with the rehabilitation process and a more reflective approach is warranted to prepare supervisors for this role.

Abstract: There is an increasing level of recognition of the pressing issues associated with climate change and resource depletion. As a result, it is well recognised that higher education institutions bear responsibilities to promote “sustainable development”. Many universities have adopted green building practices in the construction of their building infrastructure. A variety of Green Building Rating Tools (GBRTs) have been designed to facilitate green building developments. Thus, the aim of this research is to identify mechanisms to improve current GBRTs in terms of waste management (WM) practices by using green star accredited educational buildings in Australia. A qualitative approach was adopted in this study to achieve the research aim by conducting three case studies of educational buildings in South Australia. Thirty three interviews were carried out in a face-to-face, semi-structured manner and project documentations were reviewed. The participants were asked to provide their expert opinions on the GS initiative and its ability to minimise waste generation, the impact of the GS initiative on solid WM practices and problems associated with the implementation process of the GS initiative. Data was analysed using code-based content analysis using the NVivo software package. Tables and figures were used as the visualization technique to present an expedient understanding in a holistic manner. Findings showed that the Green Star (GS) initiative drives change in the way current practices are performed in the Australian construction industry. However, this study revealed that WM targets outlined in the GS initiative are not challenging enough. Thus, suggestions are provided in this research to improve the WM aspects of GS initiatives by looking beyond a focus on “sustainability” and “waste minimisation” towards a focus on regenerative environments. These findings are valuable for practitioners and policymakers seeking to improve WM practices and to address issues associated with climate change and resource depletion.
