Abstract: Slab rollback during subduction plays a key role in controlling continental growth at convergent plate boundaries. The dynamics of currently subducting slabs can be precisely constrained using geophysical techniques. In contrast, ancient episodes of slab rollback can be difficult to constrain, yet are critical to unlocking the tectonic evolution of long‐lived orogens such as the Phanerozoic Australian Tasmanides of eastern Gondwana. Recognition of ancient slab rollback relies on the identification of the progressive migration of magmatic arcs. Here, we investigate the timing and isotopic variation of ∼90 km of the trans‐orogen migration of the Carboniferous Bathurst Batholith as a potential indicator of slab rollback. U–Pb–Hf isotopes, combined with a regional zircon Hf isotope data set, suggest that the eastward migration of the batholith over ∼18 Myr, from 340.1 to 322.4 Ma, records a maximum slab steepening rate of ∼0.6–1.2° Myr −1 in a relatively stable trench setting. These results provide a magmatic record of Carboniferous slab rollback and establish a missing link between the long‐lived Lachlan and New England orogens of the eastern Gondwanan Tasmanides.

Gondwanan Eoarchean–Neoproterozoic ancient crustal material in Iran and Turkey: zircon U–Pb–Hf isotopic evidence

Abstract: The Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone is a basement culmination northeast of the Neo-Tethys suture in Iran. In this zone near Azna, granite has a magmatic zircon U–Pb age of 568 ± 11 Ma, with 900–800, ca. 2400, and ca. 3600 Ma inherited cores. The ca. 3600 Ma inherited zircon is the oldest crustal component yet detected in Iran. Near Chadegan, orthogneiss has a magmatic zircon U–Pb age of 637 ± 15 Ma, and carries ca. 1000 and 2000 Ma inherited zircons. Inherited 900–1000 Ma zircons have juvenile initial ε Hf values of ca. +8 to +9, whereas the younger 630 and 568 Ma magmatic zircons show lower initial ε Hf values however, the 3600 Ma core has initial ε Hf = 0.0. A Neoproterozoic rim on the inherited 3600 Ma core has the most extreme initial ε Hf value of −18. The Hf isotopic data indicates generation of the magmatic protoliths from a mixture of juvenile Neoproterozoic and Archean sources. Previous studies showed that in Turkey the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex is underlain by Neo-Eoarchean rocks, the Menderes Massif contains Neoproterozoic granitoids, and that central Iran’s basement and the northern Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone contain Neoproterozoic granitic rocks. This basement terrane is from Gondwana, and was transferred across Paleo-Tethys to dock against Eurasia’s southern margin. Occurrence in Iran and Turkey of Eoarchean crust raises the possibility of sinistral migration of this terrane in the closure of Tethys because the nearest known early Archean crust occurs in northeast India.

No evidence of supracrustal recycling in Si-O isotopes of Earth’s oldest rocks 4 Ga ago

Abstract: Identifying the oldest evidence for the recycling of hydrated crust into magma on Earth is important because it is most effectively achieved by subduction. However, given the sparse geological record of early Earth, the timing of first supracrustal recycling is controversial. Silicon and oxygen isotopes have been used as indicators of crustal evolution on Archean igneous rocks and minerals to trace supracrustal recycling but with variable results. We present Si-O isotopes of Earth’s oldest rocks [4.0 billion years ago (Ga)] from the Acasta Gneiss Complex, northwest Canada, obtained using multiple techniques applied to zircon, quartz, and whole rock s les. Undisturbed zircon is considered the most reliable recorder of primary Si signatures. By combining reliable Si isotope data from the Acasta s les with filtered data from Archean rocks globally, we observe that widespread evidence for a heavy Si signature is recorded since 3.8 Ga, marking the earliest record of surface silicon recycling.

Abstract: The extension of subduction processes into the Eoarchaean era (4.0–3.6 Ga) is controversial. The oldest reported terrestrial olivine, from two dunite lenses within the ∼3,720 Ma Isua supracrustal belt in Greenland, record a shape-preferred orientation of olivine crystals defining a weak foliation and a well-defined lattice-preferred orientation (LPO). [001] parallel to the maximum finite elongation direction and (010) perpendicular to the foliation plane define a B-type LPO. In the modern Earth such fabrics are associated with deformation of mantle rocks in the hanging wall of subduction systems an interpretation supported by experiments. Here we show that the presence of B-type fabrics in the studied Isua dunites is consistent with a mantle origin and a supra-subduction mantle wedge setting, the latter supported by compositional data from nearby mafic rocks. Our results provide independent microstructural data consistent with the operation of Eoarchaean subduction and indicate that microstructural analyses of ancient ultramafic rocks provide a valuable record of Archaean geodynamics.

The early Eocene (48 Ma) Qaladeza trondhjemite formed by wet partial remelting of mafic crust in the arc-related Bulfat Igneous Complex (Kurdistan, Iraq): constraints on the timing of Neotethys closur

Abstract: Events in the tectono-magmatic framework of the Eocene Bulfat Igneous Complex in the Kurdistan region of northeastern Iraq are revealed through the integrated field, petrographic, geochemical and zircon petrography and U–Pb geochronology of the Qaladeza trondhjemite sheets that cut gabbros of the complex. The trondhjemite sheets are variably deformed, with the cataclasis of large plagioclase feldspars. The trondhjemites are albitic, and geochemical features such as strong enrichment of the light REE relative to the heavy REE and low Ti and REE content show that they did not form as late differentiates of a MORB-like source, but instead by hydrous partial melting of mafic rocks, possibly also involving some more evolved crustal source as well. Qaladeza trondhjemite oscillatory-zoned magmatic zircon has an age of 48.0 ± 0.6 Ma (95% confidence). These domains have been etched to form voids in the zircons, the walls of which have thin coatings of Th- and Ca-bearing species. Subsequent partial recrystallization of the zircons obliterated the voids and increased the Th/U of the recrystallized zircon, which mostly formed at 38.74 ± 0.74 Ma. The 48 Ma domains relate to recycling of mafic crust in a proto-arc tectonic setting and are congruent with Eocene proto-arc magmatic activity within the Neotethyan oceanic basin. The 39 Ma domains relate to later tectonic-induced recrystallisation events coeval with the closure of Neotethys resulting from the late Eocene collision between the Arabian plate and Eurasia in Kurdistan.

Abstract: The two Isua supracrustal belt area (Greenland) papers by Zuo et al. (2021, 0.1029/2020tc006514 ) and Ramírez‐Salazar et al. (2021, 0.1029/2020TC006516 ) contain no evidence supporting an Eoarchean “heat‐pipe” geodynamic regime and yet no evidence negating a mobile lid one. From quartz micro‐fabric studies, Zuo et al. (2021, 0.1029/2020tc006514 ) argued for Eoarchean “relatively equal strain distributed across the belt.” This contradicts clear meso‐ and macro‐scale evidence for strongly heterogeneous Eoarchean deformation before the later deformed and metamorphosed ∼3,500 to 2,750 Ma Ameralik dykes were intruded. The Zuo et al. strain indicators relate to syn‐ hibolite facies Neoarchean basin and dome formation throughout the ∼250 km extent of the Eoarchean gneiss complex. Ramírez‐Salazar et al. (2021, 0.1029/2020TC006516 ) argued the Isua area's metamorphic signature reflects a uniform Eoarchan “heat‐pipe” geodynamic regime. However, observed Eoarchean tectonothermal conditions are more erse, including ultra‐high‐pressure relicts in peridotite lenses with supra‐subduction zone attributes, and are incompatible with a “heat‐pipe” regime.
