Abstract: Data sensing and gathering is an essential task for various information-driven services in smart cities. On the one hand, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors can be deployed at certain fixed locations to capture data reliably but suffer from limited sensing coverage. On the other hand, data can also be gathered dynamically through crowdsensing contributed by voluntary users but suffer from its unreliability and the lack of incentives for users’ contributions. In this article, we explore an integrated paradigm called “ hybrid sensing ” that harnesses both IoT-sensing and crowdsensing in a complementary manner. In hybrid sensing, users are incentivized to provide sensing data not covered by IoT sensors and provide crowdsourced feedback to assist in calibrating IoT-sensing. Their contributions will be rewarded with credits that can be redeemed to retrieve synthesized information from the hybrid system. In this article, we develop a hybrid sensing system that supports explicit user privacy—IoT sensors are obscured physically to prevent capturing private user data, and users interact with a crowdsensing server via a privacy-preserving protocol to preserve their anonymity. A key application of our system is smart parking, by which users can inquire and find the available parking spaces in outdoor parking lots. We implemented our hybrid sensing system for smart parking and conducted extensive empirical evaluations. Finally, our hybrid sensing system can be potentially applied to other information-driven services in smart cities.

Abstract: HMG CoA reductase inhibitors reduce cellular availability of mevalonate, a precursor in cholesterol synthesis. Since the cholesterol content of cell membranes is an important determinant of Na(+)-K(+) pump function we speculated that treatment with HMG CoA reductase inhibitors affects Na(+)-K(+) pump activity. We treated rabbits and rats for 2 weeks with the HMG CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin and measured Na(+)-K(+) pump current (I(p)) in isolated rabbit cardiac myocytes using the whole cell patch-cl technique, K-dependent p-nitrophenyl phosphatase (p-NPPase) activity in crude myocardial and skeletal muscle homogenates, and vanadate-facilitated 3H-ouabain binding in intact skeletal muscle s les from rats. Treatment with lovastatin caused statistically significant reductions in I(p), myocardial and skeletal muscle K-dependent p-NPPase activity and 3H-ouabain binding in the myocardium and skeletal muscle. The lovastatin-induced decrease in I(p) was eliminated by parenteral co-administration of mevalonate. However, this was not related to cardiac cholesterol content. Treatment with lovastatin reduces Na(+)-K(+) pump activity and abundance in rabbit and rat sarcolemma.

Abstract: Using a mobile base station (BS) in a wireless sensor network can alleviate nonuniform energy consumption among sensor nodes and accommodate partitioned networks. In the work of Jerew and Liang (2009) we have proposed a novel clustering-based heuristic algorithm for finding a trajectory of the mobile BS that strikes a nontrivial tradeoff between the traffic load among sensor nodes and the tour time constraint of the mobile BS. In this paper, we first show how to choose the number of clusters to ensure there is no packet loss as the BS moves between clusters. We then provide an analytical solution to the problem in terms of the speed of the mobile BS. We also provide analytical estimates of the unavoidable packet loss as the network size increases. We finally conduct experiments by simulation to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show that the use of clustering in conjunction with a mobile BS for data gathering can significantly prolong network lifetime and balance energy consumption of sensor nodes.
