An Effective Negotiation Strategy for Quantitative and Qualitative Issues in Multi-Agent Systems

Abstract: Automated negotiation is an efficient approach for interaction in multi-agent systems in which agents exchange offers and counteroffers to conclude an agreement. This paper addresses the problem of offer formulation during the interaction between buyer and seller software agents for the purpose of reaching an agreement over quantitative and qualitative issues at once. In order to improve the outcome of the negotiation process, a hybrid negotiation method is presented and verified. Offer formulation is based on fuzzy similarity and preference-based methods. The preference-based mechanism is used for quantitative issues, while the fuzzy similarity technique is used for qualitative issues. The preference-based mechanism takes into account the preferences of the opponent when generating offers the agent makes greater concessions on the issues which the opponent prefers more. The fuzzy-similarity method formulates an offer that considers offering a deal that is more similar to the one received by the opponent during the last round of negotiation. The experiments consists of two parts. The first part compares the hybrid strategy with the basic one. The findings reveal that the hybrid strategy is better in all performance measures, namely, utility rate, agreement rate, and Nash product rate. The second part of the experimental work compares four mechanisms of offer generating mechanisms: basic, preference-based, fuzzy similarity, and hybrid. The results show that the hybrid negotiation strategy performs equal or better that other negotiation strategies. More details can be found in the paper.

Abstract: With the continued appeal and adoption of cloud computing, an assessment of cloud run costs and migration affordability prior to adoption would assist enterprises that have several legacy applications targeted for cloud migration. However, as cloud migrations have become more prevalent, many have been characterised by unsuccessful migration or application modernisation attempts. The primary reason behind the failed attempts is insufficient planning upfront, to identify which legacy applications are suitable to realise the benefits of public or private cloud, leading to time and cost overruns. There is a need for strategic decision making for application portfolios to mitigate the risks of cost overruns and migration delays. Thus, a Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) of cloud run costs for an application portfolio is required in the planning phase as an input into IT governance. To obtain the ROM cloud run costs, it is necessary to baseline application data, preferably through automated discovery, and perform quantitative analysis of the applications. Therefore, we propose an approach to (a) baseline application data using Application Portfolio Profiling (APP), and (b) perform quantitative analysis of applications using an Application Portfolio Assessment (APA), to inform the legacy application migration decision. APP and APA are proposed as part of a Cloud Computing Considerations for Companies (CCCC) framework that enables an enterprise to make an informed decision regarding which legacy applications are to be migrated as part of enterprise Cloud Computing adoption. This decision is important because of the change in operating model, infrastructure requirements, hidden costs and commercial models inherent with cloud computing adoption. We validate the proposed framework through applying it to a real-world use case scenario that provides the necessary coverage to test the proposed framework.

Annual survival of North American Razorbills (Alca torda) varies with ocean climate indices

Abstract: According to life-history theory, survival in long-lived animals is not expected to vary greatly with environmental conditions. However, recent studies of a number of seabirds have shown that ocean climate indices such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index and sea surface temperature are correlated with adult survival. Here we evaluated whether annual adult survival of Razorbills ( Alca torda L., 1758) at two breeding colonies covaried with oceanographic conditions in the North Atlantic during 1995–2006. We also examined pre-breeder survival (from fledging to age 2). The relationship between local adult survival and the North Atlantic Oscillation and two oceanographic variables (Labrador Current temperature profile and Bay of Fundy sea surface temperature) were evaluated using the program MARK. Capture–mark–recapture data fit the assumptions of the program MARK reasonably well with ĉ values ranging from 1.390 to 2.404. Pre-breeder survival rates were high for Machias Seal Island (Ф = 0.778 ± 0.041) and low for the Gannet Islands (Ф = 0.482 ± 0.033), likely the result of hunting pressure. On Machias Seal Island, constant adult survival (Ф = 0.967 ± 0.028) was the best model however, time-dependent models that included a climate covariate performed nearly as well. On the Gannet Islands, adult survival (Ф = 0.890 ± 0.053) was negatively correlated with Labrador Current temperature. Overall, our results show significant differences in survival rates across sites over the same time period and highlight the importance of multisite studies and smaller scale climate indices for local populations. In addition, our study contributes to the growing body of evidence that survival in long-lived animals may vary with environmental conditions more than previously expected.

Abstract: This study assessed the relationship between haemoglobin mass (Hb(mass)) and maximum oxygen consumption (VO(2max)) in adolescents over 1 year. Twenty-three subjects (11-15 years) participated 12 undertook ~12 months of cycle training (cyclists) and 11 were sedentary (controls). Hb(mass) and VO(2max) were measured approximately every 3 months. At baseline there was a high correlation (r = 0.82, P < 0.0001) between relative VO(2max) (ml kg(-1) min(-1)) and relative Hb(mass) (g kg(-1)). During 12 months there was a significant increase in relative VO(2max) of the cyclists but not the controls however, there was no corresponding increase in relative Hb(mass) of either group. The correlation between percent changes in relative VO(2max) and relative Hb(mass) was not significant for cyclists (r = 0.31, P = 0.33) or controls (r = 0.42, P = 0.19). Training does not increase relative Hb(mass) in adolescents consistent with a strong hereditary role for Hb(mass) and VO(2max). Hb(mass) may be used to identify adolescents who have a high VO(2max).

Replication history of B lymphocytes reveals homeostatic proliferation and extensive antigen-induced B cell expansion

Abstract: The contribution of proliferation to B lymphocyte homeostasis and antigen responses is largely unknown. We quantified the replication history of mouse and human B lymphocyte subsets by calculating the ratio between genomic coding joints and signal joints on kappa-deleting recombination excision circles (KREC) of the IGK-deleting rearrangement. This approach was validated with in vitro proliferation studies. We demonstrate that naive mature B lymphocytes, but not transitional B lymphocytes, undergo in vivo homeostatic proliferation in the absence of somatic mutations in the periphery. T cell–dependent B cell proliferation was substantially higher and showed higher frequencies of somatic hypermutation than T cell–independent responses, fitting with the robustness and high affinity of T cell–dependent antibody responses. More extensive proliferation and somatic hypermutation in antigen-experienced B lymphocytes from human adults compared to children indicated consecutive responses upon additional antigen exposures. Our combined observations unravel the contribution of proliferation to both B lymphocyte homeostasis and antigen-induced B cell expansion. We propose an important role for both processes in humoral immunity. These new insights will support the understanding of peripheral B cell regeneration after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or B cell–directed antibody therapy, and the identification of defects in homeostatic or antigen-induced B cell proliferation in patients with common variable immunodeficiency or another antibody deficiency.

An Innovative Stochastic Multi-Agent-Based Energy Management Approach for Microgrids Considering Uncertainties

Abstract: In microgrids a major share of the energy production comes from renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels or wind turbines. The intermittent nature of these types of producers along with the fluctuation in energy demand can destabilize the grid if not dealt with properly. This paper presents a multi-agent-based energy management approach for a non-isolated microgrid with solar and wind units and in the presence of demand response, considering uncertainty in generation and load. More specifically, a modified version of the lightning search algorithm, along with the weighted objective function of the current microgrid cost, based on different scenarios for the energy management of the microgrid, is proposed. The probability density functions of the solar and wind power outputs, as well as the demand of the households, have been used to determine the amount of uncertainty and to plan various scenarios. We also used a particle swarm optimization algorithm for the microgrid energy management and compared the optimization results obtained from the two algorithms. The simulation results show that uncertainty in the microgrid normally has a significant effect on the outcomes, and failure to consider it would lead to inaccurate management methods. Moreover, the results confirm the excellent performance of the proposed approach.
