Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine why people visit multicultural festivals, with the overall aim being to better understand the apparent popularity of multicultural festivals. The paper aims to provide key stakeholders with a platform upon which to better manage and improve multicultural festivals as tourism attractions. An on‐site questionnaire survey was administered at one of the multicultural festivals in South Korea in 2010. The reasons for visit were measured using a scale based on existing benefit scales, and literature related to multiculturalism. In total, 17 items were analyzed as visitor reasons for their visit. Demographic questions included age, nationality, the reason for living in South Korea if not a Korean, and gender. Out of 203 collected questionnaires, 183 were considered usable. In total, five factors were identified as the reasons for attending a multicultural festival – family togetherness, escape, cultural exploration, socialization, and curiosity. The cultural exploration proved to be the most common reason for attending a multicultural festival for visitors. The findings of this study will help all key stakeholders to more fully understand what visitors want, and guide festival management to organize sustainable festivals as a niche tourism attraction. Due to the desire for cultural exploration, festivals should offer multicultural themed activities. Sport competitions can be good for socialization between migrants and South Koreans, or migrants themselves. Although multicultural festivals are held in many countries, there appears to be little research into the multicultural festivals in a country like South Korea, in transit from being ethnically homogeneous to becoming a multicultural society. This paper is a pioneer study in that particular discipline.

Abstract: Sport events offer valuable experiences in distinctive settings, and serve as settings for social identity formation. Drawing on the literature from a range of disciplines, events characteristics are seen to provide spaces for the cocreation of values, liminality, communitas, flow experiences, and authenticity. It is suggested that sport events facilitate career progression in relation to serious leisure and the development of social identification. This article provides further insight about the nature of event experiences with implications for event management.

Abstract: Festivals and events can be a platform for interactions and social connections. More recently, events have been linked to social well-being, assisting in reducing loneliness and increasing social connectedness. However, with the emergence of COVID-19, event attendance has been altered as people have been restricted from attending face-to-face events and virtual events have become a popular mode of events. This study, therefore, aims to examine whether the frequency and mode (face-to-face and virtual) of event attendance influence attendees’ feelings of loneliness and social connections. The survey results reveal the significant relationship between face-to-face event attendance and social connectedness. In contrast, the frequency of virtual event attendance was not found to have a significant effect on social connectedness or loneliness. The type of face-to-face and virtual events attended was also reported in the study, providing us with some understanding of event attendance amongst changing times.

Abstract: This study explores why people attend a multicultural festival and what benefits they perceive they gain from attending such a festival. Semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted with festival visitors of a multicultural festival held in Adelaide, Australia. A multilayered structure of motivation and benefit themes was identified through thematic content analysis of the interview data differences of motivations and benefits of attending the multicultural festival were found between festival visitors whose self-identified ethnic cultures were represented at the festival and those whose cultures were not featured. The study suggests that multicultural festival visitors gain broad festival experiences that lead to enduring benefits that center around the development of multiculturalism values. This study contributes to the literature in theorizing a context-driven approach in festival visitor studies through exploring context-specific visitor motivations and benefits at multicultural festivals.

Abstract: This study aims to understand tourism and hospitality small and medium-sized enterprises' (THSMEs) decision making about event leveraging, specifically by exploring the critical factors that drive THSMEs to engage in event leveraging. By examining event leveraging from the entrepreneurial process perspective, this study provides new understanding of evaluating and interpreting local businesses' event leveraging. The results from semistructured interviews with THSMEs' owners and managers revealed four critical factors affecting THSMEs' decision making regarding event leveraging. Information availability , which refers to obtaining information about upcoming events in a timely manner and acquiring know-how in event leveraging, was found to be the most critical factor. This factor was found to influence another three factors, namely, business strategy, internal resources , and attitude and belief toward event leveraging . Based on the findings of this study, practical recommendations are provided for destination marketing organizations and local business associations to better support THSMEs to benefit through events.

Abstract: This study examines the intention of local residents to attend events in their neighborhood when mass gatherings are being perceived as a risky activity, particularly due to a public health risk, and investigates the differences in behavioral intention by personal factors. The survey findings show a strong willingness of community members to attend events and that it varies across household types and the number of previous visits to events. Age and gender, which were shown in previous studies to affect risk perception, have not been found relevant in the context of willingness to attend local events. The identified factors from a focus group, such as trust in government regulations, familiarity with the place, as well as previous positive experiences at events, can be seen as important to reinforce the willingness of residents to attend local events in times of crisis.

Abstract: Events have been well-recognized for their economic and social benefits however, their broader effect on regenerating urban space and placemaking has not been duly examined. Using the community capitals framework, this study aims to address this gap by exploring how events are used for placemaking of main streets and precincts, and the critical success factors (CSFs) of placemaking through events. Semistructured interviews were conducted with local councils and business associations who are responsible for the development and management of significant precincts and main streets in Adelaide, Australia. Findings indicate that events effectively assist in placemaking of precincts and main streets not only through economic development and improving place identity but also by creating positive community changes through place activation and social capital and community capacity development, which have the capacity to deliver more enduring benefits of placemaking. Four CSFs are identified in placemaking of main streets and precincts through events, namely active engagement and collaboration a good fit strategic event concepts and a holistic placemaking plan. Based on the study findings, practical recommendations for planners and practitioners about the effective use of events for placemaking are provided.

Abstract: Although contributions from the disciplines of sociology and anthropology have shaped the foundations of event studies as an academic field of inquiry, contributions from the discipline of psychology have played a minor role in the development of events scholarship. There is an opportunity for a further development of psychology of events as part of the discipline-based discourse in the event studies field. In this conceptual article, an overview of positive psychology, a study of what makes life worth living, is first presented and the field is critically evaluated. A research agenda, based on positive psychology theories and approaches, is then presented to the events reader. It is argued that the theories and approaches from this field could enhance understandings of how people anticipate events, enjoy events, and how they acquire psychological rewards and benefits from event experiences. New directions for research about visitor motivations, humor, and cocreation of events as well as visitor well-being are proposed in the article. The role and the value of appreciative inquiry, a strength-based methodological approach, to inform future event planning and design is also discussed. It is argued that the contributions from positive psychology could help develop psychology of events scholarship in a meaningful and theoretically informed manner.

Abstract: While multicultural festivals have become a significant feature of multicultural societies, offering a distinct and valuable experience for visitors, few studies have considered their role in contemporary social settings. This article outlines the key characteristics of multicultural festivals by drawing upon literature from a range of disciplines to clearly conceptualize their role. The article concludes that such festivals play a particularly significant role engendering multiculturalism in outwardly erse social contexts. It contributes, in turn, to further comprehension of the importance of such festivals in contemporary social contexts characterized by growing ethnic ersity.
