Abstract: Climate communication is a thriving research area spanning science, social science, and humanities. The field has grown explosively in recent years, necessitating increased efforts to synthesize and make sense of the resulting profusion of studies. To support scholars navigating this quickly evolving knowledge domain, we developed a knowledge map of the climate communication research landscape by applying network analysis and data visualization techniques to the metadata from 2995 publications on climate communication. The map reveals a dense web of connections among five distinct knowledge communities, indicating a tightly knit and intensely collaborative knowledge domain, and suggests new avenues for the application of climate communication knowledge, in particular to support climate services and co-production. The climate communication knowledge map answers the call for synoptic perspectives on areas of science communication while demonstrating a novel visual approach to knowledge synthesis for science communication domains.

Abstract: As the journalism profession continues to reinvent itself, journalism professors struggle to keep up with technological advancements that provide their students with industry-relevant skills. This study seeks to understand how journalism professors find information about online tools for teaching, to learn about the efficacy of their current strategies for navigating the fractured information landscape. The diffusion of innovations perspective is applied to in-depth qualitative interviews with journalism professors. The study finds that early adopters are the most adept at seeking information about, and using, online tools. Consequently, they experience the least stress around information seeking about online tools.

Abstract: This study employs Q methodology to identify responses to wildfire imagery and climate change concern. Using photographs shared on Twitter during California’s 2018 C Fire, findings reveal three different perspectives on what images evoked the most concern among in iduals: catastrophic destruction, smokescapes, and human or animal suffering. Results also reveal the images that evoke the least concern, such as scenes of aid and support and officials’ rescue meetings. These results extend literature on the role of visuals in climate change communication and have implications for the selection of images that appeal to the various perspectives of the broader public.
