Abstract: Sulphidisation, an electrochemical process for conversion of a non-sulphide, oxide or oxidised sulphide, to a sulphide surface that facilitates efficient adsorption of thiol collectors to impart hydrophobicity, offers a way to improve the enrichment of oxide and oxidised sulphide ores by flotation. Although it has shown great potential, it has equally proved to suffer from drawbacks such as low efficiency, difficulty to sulphidise minerals that are prone to surface oxidation and the chemistry at play remains insufficiently understood. These drawbacks hinder the full potential of the sulphidisation process as a remediation strategy for flotation of oxide and oxidised sulphide ores. A holistic understanding of the process is crucial in identification of the underpinning phenomena that render the process inefficient and will be a stepping stone in the quest to modify it for an improved efficiency. Therefore, this paper seeks to review the sulphidisation reactions and products at the mineral-solution interfaces of oxide and oxidised sulphide minerals. The influence and implications of the sulphidisation conditions on adsorption of thiol collectors on mineral surfaces to impart hydrophobicity necessary for flotation are also highlighted. Finally, it makes recommendations on how to circumvent the drawbacks and provides guidelines for future research and industrial application.

Abstract: Nonunion is uncommon after proximal humerus fracture surgery. There is no agreement about preferred method of treatment. Traditional approaches have included laterally based locking plates, autogenous grafting, and endosteal support to provide improved biomechanical stability. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of proximal humeral nonunion has been performed with various methods, including blade plates and bone grafting, as well as intramedullary support with autologous or allogenic grafts. Both malunion and nonunion have occurred after ORIF with locking plates. Endosteal support in the form of a fibular allograft incorporated into the locking plate construct can increase mechanical stability in selected cases. An ideal implant for proximal humeral nonunion provides medial column mechanical support and osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties. Porous intramedullary tantalum metal may play a role in nonunion surgery as an alternative to fibular allograft because of its versatility of use and salutary biological effects. It offers many material advantages for use in nonunion surgery. Tantalum is extensively porous (75%–80%), has a stiffness close to that of native bone, and offers the possibility of being a carrier for osteoinductive materials. It may also be suitable for patients who refuse allograft material. This article describes a 65-year-old woman with recalcitrant proximal humeral nonunion who was successfully treated with revision ORIF with intramedullary tantalum cylinder augmentation with a lateral-based locking plate and autogenous cancellous bone grafting. At 5-year follow-up, she had excellent motion and clinical and radiographic union.

Abstract: Dissolution of fine (-10 microm) and intermediate (+10-53 microm) galena particles was studied in the presence and absence of iron hydroxide colloids at pH 9 with nitrogen and oxygen purging. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements and ethylene diamine-tetra acid (EDTA) extraction of the galena particles after dissolution indicate that galena dissolution is strongly dependent on particle size. Fine galena particles produced a much higher amount of lead hydroxide species per surface area than intermediate galena particles. Gas purging only affected galena dissolution slightly. More iron hydroxide colloids adsorbed on fine particles. Zeta potential measurements indicate that galena dissolution enhances the adsorption of iron hydroxide colloids due to the electrostatic attraction between lead hydroxide products and iron hydroxide colloids at pH 9. This explains the stronger affinity of iron hydroxide colloids to fine galena particles than intermediate galena particles. This study has an important implication in sulfide flotation where iron hydroxide colloids play a dominant role in mineral depression.
