Investigating the Factors Affecting the Ionic Conduction in Nanoconfined NaBH₄

Abstract: Nanoconfinement is an effective strategy to tune the properties of the metal hydrides. It has been extensively employed to modify the ionic conductivity of LiBH4 as an electrolyte for Li-ion batteries. However, the approach does not seem to be applicable to other borohydrides such as NaBH4, which is found to reach a limited improvement in ionic conductivity of 10−7 S cm−1 at 115 °C upon nanoconfinement in Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 (MCM-41) instead of 10−8 S cm−1. In comparison, introducing large cage anions in the form of Na2B12H12 naturally formed upon the nanoconfinement of NaBH4 was found to be more effective in leading to higher ionic conductivities of 10−4 S cm−1 at 110 °C.

Abstract: Catalysis is at the core of previous energy transition. It has enabled the use of oil and natural gas as our primary energy sources in unprecedented ways and led to feedstocks enabling exceptionally high living standards in human history. In a decarbonized economy with hydrogen as the new energy vector, catalysis is already playing a key role in producing hydrogen. However, catalysts for the effective storage of hydrogen must be advanced. Many solid hydrogen storage materials such as magnesium‐based hydrides, alanates, and/or borohydrides display promising hydrogen densities far superior to the current state of compressed or liquid hydrogen. These solid materials have thermodynamic and kinetic barriers which severely hinder their practical hydrogen uptake and release. To date, most of these barriers for solid hydrides (especially boron or nitrogen compounds) are modified via catalysis however, the catalytic species per se and their roles are obscure. Herein, a comprehensive overview of various catalysts for solid hydrogen storage materials, their catalytic roles, and the underpinning mechanisms is provided. The current state of knowledge is critically reviewed and gaps where further research intensification is needed to support rapid hydrogen generation and storage in solid materials for the emerging hydrogen economy are identified.

Tunable NaBH₄ Nanostructures Revealing Structure‐Dependent Hydrogen Release

Abstract: Borohydrides are promising candidates for hydrogen storage and generation assuming these can be tuned to reversibly deliver hydrogen under practical conditions. Nanostructuring of borohydrides has the potential to enable such control but this has remained elusive due to the lack of approaches to effectively prepare and stabilize borohydride nanostructures. Herein, a simple and straightforward method to assemble NaBH 4 , as a model borohydride, into sphere, cube, and bar‐like shapes using tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), octadecylamine (ODA), and tridecanoic acid (TDA), respectively, is demonstrated. More importantly, the shape of the NaBH 4 nanostructures could be tuned from one morphology to another by simply adjusting the ratio of surfactants and this is found to lead to distinct hydrogen properties. In particular, remarkable shifts in the melting points and hydrogen desorption temperatures are observed depending on the NaBH 4 morphologies, i.e., spheres, cubes, or bars. For ex le, for the NaBH 4 spheres, hydrogen release starts at ≈50 °C compared to the °C of bulk NaBH 4 without any transition metal dopant or catalyst. Observation of such structure‐dependent relationships finally enables new avenues to deliberately tune borohydrides toward nanostructures with specific hydrogen properties otherwise difficult to control.

Abstract: This work reports on the synthesis of iron-platinum on Vulcan carbon (FePt/VC) as an effective catalyst for the electrooxidation of molecular hydrogen at the anode, and electroreduction of molecular oxygen at the cathode of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The catalyst was synthesized by using the simple polyol route and characterized by XRD and HRTEM along with EDS. The catalyst demonstrated superior electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and the oxidation of hydrogen with a 2.4- and 1.2-fold increase compared to platinum on Vulcan carbon (Pt/VC), respectively. Successful application of FePt/VC catalyst in a self-breathing fuel cell also showed a 1.7-fold increase in maximum power density compared to Pt/VC. Further analysis by accelerated stress test demonstrated the superior stability of FePt on the VC substrate with a 4% performance degradation after 60,000 cycles. In comparison, a degradation of 6% after 10,000 cycles has been reported for Pt/Ketjenblack.

Abstract: Hydrogen is regarded as a promising energy carrier to substitute fossil fuels. However, storing hydrogen with high density remains a challenge. NaBH4 is a potential hydrogen storage material due to its high gravimetric hydrogen density (10.8 mass%), but the hydrogen kinetic and thermodynamic properties of NaBH4 are poor against the application needs. Nanosizing is an effective strategy to improve the hydrogen properties of NaBH4. In this context, we report on the direct synthesis of NaBH4 nanoparticles (~6–260 nm) from the NaOCH3 precursor. The hydrogen desorption properties of such nanoparticles are reported as well as experimental conditions that lead to the synthesis of (Na2B12H12) free NaBH4 nanoparticles.

Abstract: The core–shell approach has surfaced as an attractive strategy to make complex hydrides reversible for hydrogen storage however, no synthetic method exists for taking advantage of this approach. Here, a detailed investigation was undertaken to effectively design freestanding core–shell NaBH 4 @Ni nanoarchitectures and correlate their hydrogen properties with structure and chemical composition. It was shown that the Ni shell growth on the surface of NaBH 4 particles could be kinetically and thermodynamically controlled. The latter led to varied hydrogen properties. Near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure analysis confirmed that control over the Ni 0 /Ni x B y concentrations upon Ni II reduction led to a destabilized hydride system. Hydrogen release from the sphere, cube, and bar‐like core–shell nanoarchitectures occurred at around 50, 90, and 95 °C, respectively, compared to the bulk ( °C). This core–shell approach, when extended to other hydrides, could open new avenues to decipher structure–property correlation in hydrogen storage/generation.

One‐Step Synthesis of Carbon‐Protected Co₃O₄ Nanoparticles toward Long‐Term Water Oxidation in Acidic Media

Abstract: The design and development of highly efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in acid media are important for various renewable technologies. Herein, an advanced Co 3 O 4 electrocatalyst supported on a mesoporous hydrophobic carbon paper (Co/29BC) is formed via a simple one‐step thermal decomposition of cobalt nitrate. Through this novel approach, the amorphous carbon layer resulting from the thermal decomposition of carbon‐containing species in the mesoporous layer provides enhanced electronic conduction and protection against corrosion to the Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Equally important, the OER performance is found to be correlated with the morphology and surface composition of Co 3 O 4 . With optimized Co 3+ active sites and oxygen vacancies at the metal oxide surface, the Co 3 O 4 catalyst shows superior OER performance and durability in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzer, with a small overpotential (350 mV) at a constant current density of 10 mA cm −1 for over 50 h. Accordingly, this work provides new insights toward the design of high‐performance and highly stable OER electrocatalysts in corrosive acidic environments.

Measuring nutrition‐related outcomes in a cohort of multi‐trauma patients following intensive care unit discharge

Abstract: Functional recovery is an important outcome for those who survive critical illness. The present study aimed to assess nutrition provision and nutrition-related outcomes in a multi-trauma cohort following intensive care unit (ICU) discharge. The present study investigated a prospective cohort of patients discharged from an ICU, who had been admitted because of major trauma and required mechanical ventilation for at least 48 h. Nutrition-related outcomes, including body weight, quadriceps muscle layer thickness (QMLT), handgrip strength and subjective global assessment, were recorded on ICU discharge, days 5-7 post-ICU discharge and then weekly until hospital discharge. Nutrition intake was recorded for 5 days post-ICU discharge. Unless otherwise stated, data are presented as the mean (SD). Twenty-eight patients [75% males, 55 (22.5) years] were included. Intake met 64% (28%) of estimated energy and 72% (32%) of protein requirements over the 5 days post-ICU discharge, which was similar to over the ICU admission. From ICU admission to hospital discharge, the mean reduction in weight was 4.2 kg (95% confidence interval = 2.2-6.3, P < 0.001) and after ICU discharge, the mean reduction in weight and QMLT was 2.6 kg (95% confidence interval = 1.0-4.2, P = 0.004) and 0.23 cm (95% confidence interval = 0.06-0.4, P = 0.01), respectively. Patients received less energy and protein than estimated requirements after ICU discharge. Weight loss and reduction in QMLT also occurred during this period.

Abstract: NaAlH 4 and LiAlH 4 are promising materials for hydrogen storage due to their high hydrogen density (7.4 and 10.5 mass%, respectively). However, their practical application is h ered from the slow hydrogen kinetics and poor reversibility. To improve the hydrogen properties of alanates, the alternative core–shell strategy has been proposed. In this respect, a simple solvent evaporation method is presented to synthesize the alanate core. In this approach, NaAlH 4 and LiAlH 4 are stabilized by solvation and electrostatic forces, respectively, through the addition of ionic salts. Remarkably, it is found that the size of the alanate nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the concentration of the introduced ion. More importantly, the partial substitution of Na + and Li + with cations of higher electronegativity enables the release of hydrogen at much lower temperatures.

Abstract: LiAlH4 and NaAlH4 are considered to be promising hydrogen storage materials due to their high hydrogen density. However, their practical use is h ered by the lack of hydrogen reversibility along with poor kinetics. Nanosizing is an effective strategy to enable hydrogen reversibility under practical conditions. However, this has remained elusive as the synthesis of alanate nanoparticles has not been explored. Herein, a simple solvent evaporation method is demonstrated to assemble alanate nanoparticles with the use of surfactants as a stabilizer. More importantly, the roles of the surfactants in enabling control over particle size and morphology was determined. Surfactants with long linear carbon chains and matching the hard character of alanates are more prone to lead to the formation of small particles of ~10 nm due to steric hindrance. This can result in significant shifts in the temperature for hydrogen release.
