Abstract: Face-to-face communication with students remains the gold standard in teaching the effectiveness of this approach to learning is commonly and regularly assessed by students' evaluation of teaching and peer reviews of teaching. Critics note that increases in on-line education are driven more by economic forces than consistent evidence to show their long-term effectiveness or acceptance by students. Numerous studies report that students in higher education found their external studies comparatively more challenging than face-to-face delivery. Identifying how educators might best provide sufficient and effective personal support for students studying in the external mode continues to challenge educators. Opportunities do exist for blending on-line course work with synchronous interactions between students and their teachers but evaluations of these innovations rarely appear in the literature. In this study, a web-based virtual classroom simulated the synchronous face-to-face discussions that occur between Bachelor of Nursing students and tutors. First year students enrolled externally in a biological science course interacted in a virtual classroom for 13 weeks completing an 'evaluation of experience' survey following their final assessment. A comparison was made between 'on-c us' and 'external to c us' students to determine the relationship between i) overall satisfaction with the course and ii) final grades, as well as their experience of the virtual class.

Abstract: Cigarette smoking is common in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders (SUD). However, little is known about the relationship between cigarette and cannabis use trajectories in the context of treatment for both ADHD and SUD. To address this research gap, we report collateral analyses from a 16-week randomized, controlled trial (n=303) of osmotic-release methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) in adolescents with ADHD concurrently receiving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) targeting non-nicotine SUD. Participants completed cigarette and cannabis use self-report at baseline and throughout treatment. Analyses were performed to explore the relationships between cigarette smoking, cannabis use, and other factors, such as medication treatment assignment (OROS-MPH versus placebo). Baseline (pre-treatment) cigarette smoking was positively correlated with cannabis use. Negligible decline in cigarette smoking during treatment for non-nicotine SUD was observed in both medication groups. Regular cigarette and cannabis users at baseline who reduced their cannabis use by >50% also reduced cigarette smoking (from 10.8±1.1 to 6.2±1.1 cigarettes per day). Findings highlight the challenging nature of concurrent cannabis and cigarette use in adolescents with ADHD, but demonstrate that changes in use of these substances during treatment may occur in parallel.

Abstract: Rats with a gentic deficiency of phosphorylase kinase have been treated with the 1,4-α-glucosidase inhibitor, Acarbose. Lysosomal glycogen metabolism has been markedly altered and the results support the concept of a feedback control mechanism operating on the uptake mechanism into the lysosomal compartment.

Abstract: The high molecular weight glycogen associated with the lysosomal compartment in glycogen storage disease type VIII is more resistant to degradation by proteinase than normal glycogen. The assembly of large glycogen particles on disulphide-linked protein backbones has been confirmed and the disulphide-reducing nature of the lysosome appears to confer an advantage in the amylolytic degradation of glycogen. Experiments utilising acarbose, a lysosomal (1----4)-alpha-D-glucosidase inhibitor, show that some blood glucose could arise in normal mammals from extra-hepatic tissue, by degradation of the glycogen in the lysosomal compartment.

Abstract: Flipped classroom models allocate more time for active learning approaches compared with more traditional pedagogies, however what is less clear with the utilisation of flipped learning is evidence to support whether students in flipped classes are given more opportunities to develop higher order thinking skills (HOTs) to effect deep learning compared with the traditional ways of teaching. Focussing on this gap, this study compares on c us and off c us student engagement in two courses using different deliveries: online face-to-face (f2f) mixed mode (on c us students attend traditional f2f on c us classes and off c us students study exclusively online) versus fully online mode, utilising flipped classes (all student study off c us engaging in flipped virtual classes). Final course grades were similar for both deliveries however, the study suggests flipped classes offered students more opportunities to develop HOTs and engage more deeply in the learning process. Students’ evaluations of the online flipped delivery were mixed, with those students previously enrolled exclusively as on c us, particularly dissatisfied with fully online delivery and virtual class tutor experience. Recommendations are made concerning both the timing of the introduction of fully online delivery in a program and the need for continual up-skilling of staff who teach in online environments.
