Nanoscale variation in energy dissipation in austenitic shape memory alloys in ultimate loading cycles

Abstract: Wavy behaviours of hysteresis energy variation in nanoscale bulk of thermomechanical austenitic NiTi shape memory alloy are reported in ultimate nanoindentation loading cycles. One sharp and two spherical tips were used while two loading–unloading rates were applied. For comparison, another austenitic copper-based shape memory alloy, CuAlNi shape memory alloy, and a metal with no phase transition, elastoplastic Cu, were investigated. In shape memory alloys, the hysteresis energy variation ultimately undergoes a linear decrease with internal wavy fluctuations and no stabilisation was observed. The internal energy fluctuation in these alloys was found dissimilar depending on the loading–unloading rate and the indentation tip geometry. In contrast, there was an absence of both overall and internal variations in hysteresis energy for Cu after the second loading cycle. The underlying physics of these variations is discussed and found to be attributed to both the created dislocations and ratcheting thermal–mechanical behaviour of the phase-transformed volume in shape memory alloys.

Abstract: The effect of foam fillers on the impact behaviour and energy absorption of an aluminium tube is investigated. Both experimental test and computational simulation are employed in current study. For comparison, hollow tubes and foams are also tested, respectively. Foam filler is found to be ineffective in increasing the crushing loads of the composite tubes over the simple superposition of the crushing loads of hollow tube and foam. Also, foam filler increases the tendency for the concertina mode of folding. The foam fillers of tubes additionally result in increasing the SAE values over those of hollow tubes.

Abstract: Additive manufacturing (AM) is a sustainable and innovative manufacturing technology to fabricate products with specific properties and complex shapes for additive manufacturable materials including polymers, steels, titanium, copper, ceramics, composites, etc. This technology can well facilitate consumer needs on products with complex geometry and shape, high strength and lightweight. It is sustainable with having a layer-by-layer manufacturing process contrary to the traditional material removal technology—subtractive manufacturing. However, there are still challenges on the AM technologies, which created barriers for their further applications in engineering fields. For ex le, materials properties including mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of the additively manufactured products are greatly affected by using different ways of AM methods and it was found as the material anisotropy phenomenon. In this study, a detailed literature review is conducted to investigate research work conducted on the material anisotropy phenomenon of additively manufactured materials. Based on research findings on material anisotropy phenomenon reported in the literature, this review paper aims to understand the nature of this phenomenon, address main factors and parameters influencing its severity on thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of 3D printed parts, and also, explore potential methods to minimise or mitigate this unwanted anisotropy. The outcomes of this study would be able to shed a light on improving additive manufacturing technologies and material properties of additively manufactured materials.

Application of Non-Symmetric Bending Principles on Modelling Fatigue Crack Behaviour and Vibration of a Cracked Rotor

Abstract: Many studies on cracked rotors developed crack breathing models that assume that the neutral axis of bending always remains horizontal for simplification. These models may generate significant discrepancies and thus there is a need to develop more sophisticated models to look into the shifting of the neutral axis for a cracked rotor. Herein, a case study on the shifting of the neutral axis for a cracked rotor is firstly performed by using a three-dimensional finite element model to confirm that the neutral axis becomes inclined as the cracked rotor rotates. In response to this finding, non-symmetric bending principles are used to develop a new crack breathing model which has the advantage of being able to numerically calculate the inclination angle of the neutral axis. When compared to an existing crack model in the literature that assumes that the neutral axis remains horizontal (HNA model), the proposed model is relatively less stiff in bending as a result of an overall lower area moment of inertia. Using the harmonic balance method, a two-dimensional finite element vibration model of a cracked rotor was devised by employing the proposed crack breathing model and the HNA model for validation. It can be found that the vibration litudes of the first three frequency components are similar between the two models for shallow cracks and significantly differed for deep cracks. This result highlights the potential of the proposed model for modelling and detecting mid-to-late-stage cracks in rotors.

Abstract: Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite materials are being employed widely in the manufacturing of next-generation aircraft because of their superior mechanical properties compared to those of metallic-based materials. Owing to growing interest in CFRP materials from large commercial and military aircraft manufacturers, such as Boeing and Airbus, research that investigates lightning strikes and associated damage is of paramount importance, as the fiber-polymer composite is highly resistive to electrical current. The high resistivity of traditional CFRP materials means that they are susceptible to extreme damage caused by the Joule effect, also known as resistive heating. The aim of the study presented in this paper is to determine and quantify the effectiveness of a developed multi-variable pyrolysis approach to model the transient material degradation during a lightning strike event. The study employs the finite element method (FEM) in the form of a coupled thermal–electrical analysis in conjunction with a user subroutine available in Abaqus. A parametric study was conducted to compare three different peak current values (20[Formula: see text]kA, 30[Formula: see text]kA and 40[Formula: see text]kA) based on a model that utilized pyrolysis-dependent material constituents as well as a novel model for specific heat capacity. The study also included a heat transfer step for a cool-down process. The results obtained from the model developed have strong agreement with the surface damage area and depth of damage compared with those from experimental analysis in literature.

Abstract: In the study, both experimental work and numerical modeling are performed to investigate the pore size effects on the mechanical properties and deformation behaviours of titanium foams. Cylindrical titanium foam s les with different pore sizes are fabricated through powder metallurgy. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to determine the pore size, pore distribution and the ratios of the length to width of pores. Compressive tests are carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the titanium foams with different pore sizes. Finally, finite element modeling is attempted to simulate the deformation behaviour and the mechanical properties of the titanium foams. Results indicate that titanium foams with different pore sizes have different geometrical characteristics, which lead to different deformation behaviours of cell walls during compression, resulting in different mechanical properties of titanium foams.

Predicting Material Properties of Additively Manufactured Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene via a Multiscale Analysis Process

Abstract: Additive manufacturing (AM) has inherent mechanical strength inconsistencies when the build orientation changes. To address this issue, theoretical models, including analytical and numerical models, can be developed to predict the material properties of additively manufactured materials. This study develops a systematic finite element (FE)-based multiscale numerical model and simulation process for the polymer acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). ABS s les are fabricated using fused deposition modelling (FDM) to determine the material properties and mechanical behaviours. For macroscale analysis, good agreement between the numerical and experimental tensile strength of transverse s les proved that the FE model is applicable for applying a reverse engineering method in simulating the uniaxial tension of s les. The FE modelling method shows its capability to consider infill density effects. For mesoscale analysis, two methods are developed. The first method is a representative volume element (RVE)-based numerical model for all longitudinal s les. The second method is analytical and based on the rule of mixtures (ROM). Modified rule of mixtures (MROM) models are also developed, which demonstrate an improvement compared to the original ROM models. The research outcomes of this study can facilitate the AM process of parts in various engineering fields.

Some Aspects of Thermal Transport across the Interface between Graphene and Epoxy in Nanocomposites

Abstract: Owing to the superior thermal properties of graphene, graphene-reinforced polymer nanocomposites hold great potential as the thermal interface materials (TIMs) dissipating heat for electronic packages. However, this application is greatly hindered by the high thermal resistance at the interface between graphene and polymer. In this paper, some important aspects of the improvement of the thermal transport across the interface between graphene and epoxy in graphene-epoxy nanocomposites, including the effectiveness of covalent and noncovalent functionalization, isotope doping, and acetylenic linkage in graphene are systematically investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The simulation results show that the covalent and noncovalent functionalization techniques could considerably reduce the graphene-epoxy interfacial thermal resistance in the nanocomposites. Among different covalent functional groups, butyl is more effective than carboxyl and hydroxyl in reducing the interfacial thermal resistance. Different noncovalent functional molecules, including 1-pyrenebutyl, 1-pyrenebutyric acid, and 1-pyrenebutylamine, yield a similar amount of reductions. Moreover, it is found that the graphene-epoxy interfacial thermal resistance is insensitive to the carbon isotope doping in graphene, while it can be reduced moderately by replacing the sp(2) bonds in graphene with acetylenic linkages.

Abstract: Al and Mg alloys are widely used in industry as main lightweight alloys. They have excellent properties, such as low density, high ductility, and high specific strength, and so on. Generally speaking, Mg alloys are better than Al alloys. However the corrosion of Mg alloys is much more difficult to control compared Al alloys. Therefore to combine these two lightweight alloys, a composite-like structure is an ideal solution since Al alloys can be used as protective coatings for Mg alloys. Compound casting is a realistic technique to get this coating system. In the current study, we numerically study the compound casting using finite element method (FEM) to make these two alloys, a composite-like structure, satisfy requirements to resist corrosion required from industry, in which the aluminum layer is acting as a protective coating for the magnesium substrate. Several finite element models have been developed by using the birth and death element technique and we focus on compound casting-induced residual stresses in the compounded structure. The numerical results obtained from the proposed finite element models show the distribution profiles of thermal residual stresses. We found the major factors influencing the residual stresses are the temperature to pre-heating the Al substrate and the thickness of Mg deposits.

Abstract: Electrochemical synthesis of a tri-layer polypyrrole based actuator optimized for performance was reported. The 0.05 M pyrrole and 0.05 M tetrabutylammonium hexaflurophosphate in propylene carbonate (PC) yielded the optimum performance and stability. The force produced ranged from 0.2 to 0.4mN. Cyclic deflection tests on PC based actuators for 3 hours indicated that the displacement decreased by 60%. PC based actuator had a longer operating time, exceeding 3 hours, compared to acetonitrile based actuators. A triple-layer model of the polymer actuator was developed based on the classic bending beam theory by considering strain electrode material. A tri-layer actuator was fabricated [4, 6], by initially sputter coating a PVDF film with approximately 100nm of gold layer, resulting in a conductive film with a surface resistance of 8-10Ω. The PVDF film was about ~145µm thick had an approximate pore size of 45μm. A solution containing 0.05M distilled pyrrole monomer, 0.05M (TBAPF6) and 1% (w/w) distilled water in PC (propylene carbonate) solution was purged with nitrogen for 15 minutes. The continuity between PPy and PVDF. Results predicted by the model were in good agreement with the experimental data.
