Breast And Ovarian Cancer: Beyond Genome Wide Association Studies
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$863,910.00
Summary
My research is focused on using genetic approaches to understand the basis of cancer, particularly breast and ovarian cancer. Although many risk factors have been identified for these cancers, they do not lend themselves to primary prevention, except for high risk individuals who opt for prophylactic surgery, and so there is an urgent need to understand the aetiology of these cancers in order to develop better risk prediction algorithms and risk reduction medications.
Technology is changing the lives of Australians. We need to understand the impact on health to gain the benefits with minimal harm. This fellowship will support a program of internationally leading research drawing together ergonomics, physiotherapy and physical activity expertise. Example projects include the impact of electronic games on children’s activity, walking workstations to increase physical activity of office workers and a family-based program for overweight adolescents.
A-Prof Wheatley is a respiratory and sleep disorders physician investigating the pathogenesis, health consequences and management of sleep breathing disorders, including sleep apnoea and snoring.
Defining Optimal Strategies For Sustained Control Of Infectious Diseases
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$763,845.00
Summary
My work helps us understand how infections spread between people, to work out the most effective use of vaccines and other protective measures. This fellowship will support research into the ways large family size, poor health care access, social connections and the environment increase infection risk in settings of poverty. We will find better ways to prevent infectious diseases in the populations worst affected, including Indigenous Australians and people living in low-income countries.
Preventing Infectious Disease In Vulnerable Populations: Smarter Surveillance, Enhanced Epidemiology And Targeted Trials
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$631,010.00
Summary
Vulnerable populations, including people who inject drugs and female sex workers, are susceptible to infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C. Preventing the transmission of these infections presents major challenges. The proposed research will 1) develop innovative approaches to identifying and understanding infectious disease in vulnerable populations; 2) improve our responses by designing and testing new approaches to prevention; and 3) reduce associated morbidity and mortality.
Stem Cell Niches: Biology And Therapeutic Applications
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$640,210.00
Summary
This research aims to identify how stem cells are regulated in the body in order to improve therapies for blood disorders and abnormal bone formation after severe traumas. Targeting molecules that deregulate stem cells will lead to improved treatments for diseases with outcomes including improved treatments for blood stem cell transplantation, improved therapy in cancer patients and reduced complications of spinal cord injuries.
Improving Translation Of Evidence Into Practice For Musculoskeletal Conditions
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$948,684.00
Summary
Musculoskeletal conditions place a huge burden on the world’s population. Yet current trials in this field may not reflect priorities based upon this burden and few trials address well-recognised evidence-practice gaps. My fellowship will aim to transform the current ad hoc approach to Australian musculoskeletal clinical trials. It will identify the most critical unanswered questions, formulate a national research agenda, and identify best methods for optimising uptake of findings into practice.
Developing And Implementing Proven Treatments And Systems Of Care In Stroke
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$873,684.00
Summary
This fellowship will allow me to continue undertaking large-scale, multicentre, national and international, randomised controlled trials and population-based epidemiological studies focussed on the prevention and managment of acute stroke and other aspects of cardiovascular disease related to ageing populations. Much of my research is focussed on research and health policy of populations in Asia, particularly China, where i have had a sustained program of collaborative research over 10 years.
Innovation In The Primary Care Management Of Back Pain
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$152,595.00
Summary
Back pain affect millions of Australians. Billions of dollars are spent each year on treament but health outcomes are often poor. Experience from overseas shows that simply spending more money on current treatments won’t fix the problem. This fellowship will be used to support a program of research to improve the quality and efficiency of treatments and health services.
The overall goal of the program is to develop novel approaches to slow the progress or prevent neurodegeneration in patients with rare human genetic disorders. The second program is designed to develop novel therapeutics from snake venom proteins. These include proteins with anti-bleeding activity and those with application in wound healing. The third program involves the development of novel biomarkers for the early detection and prognosis in prostate cancer.
