Abstract: Jacques Derrida's The Animal That Therefore I Am (2008) presents a sustained reflection on a concept of ‘the animal’ that has underpinned the work of much of the philosophical tradition. Based on a series of lectures originally presented in 1997 Derrida's speculation on the question of the animal was thus written at a time when Derrida's thought was often turned to the motif of ‘to-come’ (see Derrida 1992 1994) such that one may wonder at the apparent evasion, both in Derrida's text and in its subsequent review, of the chance to think the two themes together, in the guise of ‘the animal-to-come’. Picking up on Derrida's asides on the verb ‘to follow’, this discussion considers what it might mean to follow, ‘methodically’ perhaps, the thought of ‘the animal-to-come’? What problems might it help to bring into focus and what forces and lineages may yet bear upon its very thought? And where in our thinking goes the animal if it is to remain always to come?

Abstract: Percutaneous pedestals have been integral to the development of cochlear implants since 1969. By enabling direct electrical access to implanted electrodes or other devices, they allow optimization of control of stimulation strategies. Similarly, technology not validated for implantable use can be safely tested. These advantages have facilitated the development of cochlear implants and also resulted in their inclusion in trials investigating electronic implants developed for other organs. Surgery is straightforward, but post-operative care, in particular, skin-care is crucial to ensure complications are minimized. This review discusses the history of percutaneous pedestal use in cochlear implants and other electronic devices. Surgical technique, aftercare, and complications of surgery are discussed along with possibilities for future development.

Abstract: This article introduces some of the problems confronting the popularization of national, civic and cultural heritage in the era of complex digital systems and social networks. Taking contemporary knowledge of John Curtin (Australia’s wartime PM) as its point of departure, the discussion explores some of the broader transformations of the conditions of citizenship, communication, heritage and knowledge production, and considers their implications for civic education and the uses of archives. In a novel thought experiment, the article explores some ways in which the figure of ‘John Curtin’ may be repurposed and reinvented for a new kind of DIY civic education based on user-led innovation.
