Abstract: Recently, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have drawn huge attention as a promising solution for 6G networks to enhance erse performance metrics in a cost-effective way. For massive connectivity toward a higher spectral efficiency, we address an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to an uplink nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network supported by a multiantenna receiver. We maximize the sum rate of the IRS-aided NOMA network by optimizing the IRS reflection pattern under unit modulus and practical reflection. For a moderate-sized IRS, we obtain an upper bound on the optimal sum rate by solving a determinant maximization (max-det) problem after rank relaxation, which also leads to a feasible solution through Gaussian randomization. For a large number of IRS elements, we apply the iterative algorithms relying on the gradient, such as Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) and limited-memory BFGS algorithms for which the gradient of the sum rate is derived in a computationally efficient form. The results show that the max-det approach provides a near-optimal performance under unit modulus reflection, while the gradient-based iterative algorithms exhibit merits in performance and complexity for a large-sized IRS with practical reflection.

Abstract: Previous works on orthogonal frequency ision multiple access (OFDMA) systems with quantized channel state information (CSI) were mainly based on suboptimal quantization methods. In this paper, we consider the performance limit of OFDMA systems with quantized CSI over independent Rayleigh fading channels using the rate-distortion theory. First, we establish a lower bound on the capacity of the feedback channel and build the test channel that achieves this lower bound. Then, with the derived test channel, we characterize the system performance with the outage throughput and formulate the outage throughput maximization problem with quantized channel state information (CSI). To solve this problem in low complexity, we develop a suboptimal algorithm that performs resource allocation in two steps: subcarrier allocation and power allocation. Using this approach, we can numerically evaluate the outage throughput in terms of feedback rate. Numerical results show that this suboptimal algorithm can provide a near optimal performance (with a performance loss of less than 5%) and the outage throughput with a limited feedback rate can be close to that with perfect CSI.

Abstract: The high brilliance of third-generation synchrotron sources increases the demand for faster detectors to utilize the available flux. The Maia detector is an advanced imaging scheme for energy-dispersive detection realising dwell times per image-pixel as low as 50 µs and count rates higher than 10 × 10 6 s −1 . In this article the integration of such a Maia detector in the Microprobe setup of beamline P06 at the storage ring PETRA III at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, is described. The analytical performance of the complete system in terms of rate-dependent energy resolution, scanning-speed-dependent spatial resolution and lower limits of detection is characterized. The potential of the Maia-based setup is demonstrated by key applications from materials science and chemistry, as well as environmental science with geological applications and biological questions that have been investigated at the P06 beamline.

Abstract: A two-step rf plasma oxidation technique of an insulating layer has been performed to enhance electrical and structural properties of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices. Comparison was made by analyzing properties of the MTJ oxidized by conventional rf and two-step rf plasma oxidation methods. Experimentally observed results give improved surface imaging and sufficient oxygen contents of the insulating layer under the two-step oxidation method. In addition, electrical breakdown voltage and magnetoresistance of the MTJ were increased from 0.7 to 1.8 V and from 4.5% to 6.8%, respectively, correlated with improved structural information.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a lightweight physical layer aided authentication and key agreement (PL-AKA) protocol in the Internet of Things (IoT). The conventional evolved packet system AKA (EPS-AKA) used in long-term evolution (LTE) systems may suffer from congestion in core networks by the large signaling overhead as the number of IoT devices increases. Thus, in order to alleviate the overhead, we consider cross-layer authentication by integrating physical layer approaches to cryptography-based schemes. To demonstrate the feasibility of the PL-AKA, universal software radio peripheral (USRP) based tests are conducted as well as numerical simulations. The proposed scheme shows a significant reduction in the signaling overhead, compared to the conventional EPS-AKA in both the simulation and experiment. Therefore, the proposed lightweight PL-AKA has the potential for practical and efficient implementation of large-scale IoT networks.

Abstract: Delivering Internet-of-Things (IoT) connectivity over satellite is a promising solution for applications in remote and sparsely populated areas. These applications range from smart agriculture, logistics, asset tracking to emergency services. Using a shared radio spectrum with terrestrial services will facilitate a cost-effective and rapid deployment of IoT-over-Satellite since it reduces the administrative and financial hurdles of leasing a dedicated segment of the spectrum. Although IoT-over-Satellite communication provides larger service coverage, the vast number of IoT devices also increase the interference in the satellite uplink channel, and it becomes a significant challenge for the reliable performance of the IoT-over-satellite. In this paper, we propose a framework for modeling the performance of IoT-over-Satellite access systems when sharing the radio spectrum with terrestrial networks. We take into consideration several important aspects, namely satellite orbit, terrestrial IoT devices uplink interference, atmosphere and gas absorption, and the probability of line-of-sight. The performance of the overall system is presented in terms of the uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), and thus the time-availability of the satellite link during a typical pass. We focus on low earth orbit satellites due to their potential use in IoT applications, where we evaluate the framework using actual parameters of satellites located in 300–800 km orbits. Furthermore, the paper presents a numercial model to obtain the most suitable antenna beamwidth that maximizes the link-availability of the satellite link by the simultaneous reduction in the terrestrial interference and the boosting of the underlying IoT signal of interest.

Abstract: Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) have recently attracted elevated levels of interest in large-scale and ever-growing wireless communication networks through the utilization of flying objects, e.g., satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles/drones (UAVs). Interestingly, the applications of UAV-assisted networks are rapidly becoming an integral part of future communication services. This paper first overviews the key components of NTN while highlighting the significance of emerging UAV networks where for ex le, a group of UAVs can be used as nodes to exchange data packets and form a flying ad hoc network (FANET). In addition, both existing and emerging applications of the FANET are explored. Next, it provides key recent findings and the state-of-the-art of FANETs while examining various routing protocols based on cross-layer modeling. Moreover, a modeling perspective of FANETs is provided considering delay-tolerant networks (DTN) because of the intermittent nature of connectivity in low-density FANETs, where each node (or UAV) can perform store-carry-and-forward (SCF) operations. Indeed, we provide a case study of a UAV network as a DTN, referred to as DTN-assisted FANET. Furthermore, applications of machine learning (ML) in FANET are discussed. This paper ultimately foresees future research paths and problems for allowing FANET in forthcoming wireless communication networks.

Abstract: Adaptive signal processing (ASP) and iterative signal processing (ISP) are important techniques in improving receiver performance in communication systems. Using ex les from practical transceiver designs, this 2006 book describes the fundamental theory and practical aspects of both methods, providing a link between the two where possible. The first two parts of the book deal with ASP and ISP respectively, each in the context of receiver design over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. In the third part, the applications of ASP and ISP to receiver design in other interference-limited channels, including CDMA and MIMO, are considered the author attempts to illustrate how the two techniques can be used to solve problems in channels that have inherent uncertainty. Containing illustrations and worked ex les, this book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering, as well as practitioners in the telecommunications industry.

Abstract: With signal combining and detection methods now representing a key application of signal processing in communication systems, this book provides a range of key techniques for receiver design when multiple received signals are available. Various optimal and suboptimal signal combining and detection techniques are explained in the context of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, including successive interference cancellation (SIC) based detection and lattice reduction (LR) aided detection. The techniques are then analyzed using performance analysis tools. The fundamentals of statistical signal processing are also covered, with two chapters dedicated to important background material. With a carefully balanced blend of theoretical elements and applications, this book is ideal for both graduate students and practising engineers in wireless communications.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a lightweight physical layer aided authentication and key agreement (PL-AKA) protocol in the internet of things (IoT). Conventional evolved packet system AKA (EPS-AKA) used in long-term evolution (LTE) systems may suffer from congestions in core networks by the large signaling overhead as the number of IoT devices increases. Thus, in order to alleviate the overhead, we consider a cross-layer authentication by integrating physical layer approaches to cryptography-based schemes. To demonstrate the feasibility of the PL-AKA, universal software radio peripheral (USRP) based tests are conducted as well as numerical simulations. The proposed scheme shows a significant reduction in signaling overhead compared to the conventional EPS-AKA in both simulation and experiment. Therefore, the proposed lightweight PL-AKA has the potential for practical and efficient implementation of large-scale IoT networks.

Abstract: We propose a stable feedback control algorithm of the buffer state using the controlled Lagrange multiplier in combined rate-distortion characteristics for a buffer-constrained adaptive quantization. The proposed algorithm is established using feedback control theory and is described by the state equation with nonlinearity in the feedback path. The nonlinearity of the state equation comes from the average distortion-rate curve of the information source. The stability of this buffer control algorithm is shown using Lyapunov stability theory. It is shown that the stability of the algorithm depends on average distortion-rate curve and buffer size, and sufficient conditions for the algorithm to be stable are obtained from the usual average distortion-rate curve. In addition, it is observed from experimental results that the performance of the proposed algorithm and the optimal algorithm is not significantly different. Although the proposed algorithm does not provide optimal performance, the algorithm can be implemented easily with quite low computational complexity, as compared with others.

Abstract: With a rate policy, we can achieve buffer-constrained rate control for variable bit rate coder. Since the rate policy emphasizes the stability of the state of the buffer, we can loose the advantage of variable bit rate coders, i.e., a (nearly) constant quality/distortion. To overcome the difficulty, the distortion policy is considered in this paper. Based on both the state of the buffer and the distortion, we can formulate the distortion policy. By choosing a proper weighting factor of the cost function in the distortion policy, the state of the buffer can be stable and/or the variation of the distortion sequence can be kept small. In addition, the properties of the distortion policy are obtained. We also consider switching and adaptive methods for the weighting factor to adjust time-varying characteristics of blocks of images. Using a JPEG-like image coder, the distortion policy is applied to buffer-constrained rate control.

Abstract: This chapter introduces joint beamforming (or precoding) and space-time coding for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channels. First, we explain key ideas of beamforming and space- time coding and then we discuss the joint design of beamformer and space-time codes and its benefits. Beamforming techniques play a key role in smart antenna systems as they can provide various features, including spatially selective transmissions to increase the capacity and coverage increase. STC techniques can offer both coding gain and ersity gain over MIMO channels. Thus, joint beamforming and STC is a more practical approach to exploit both spatial correlation and ersity gain of MIMO channels. We believe that joint design will be actively employed in future standards for wireless communications.
