Abstract: This study investigates the association between corporate risk disclosures and institutional shareholders and audit committees. Using a s le of 66 Australian listed companies, risk disclosures made in 2009 annual reports are analysed. Findings reveal that there is no significant relationship between dedicated-type institutional block shareholders and risk disclosure, which it is argued is consistent with a proprietary information perspective. A positive relationship however is found between transient-type institutional block shareholders and risk disclosures. This result is consistent with a principal that wields limited monitoring resources while achieving high resource dependency over management. Significant positive relationships are found between audit committee independence and risk disclosures.

Abstract: This paper aims to examine whether the 2007 IFRS converged Chinese GAAP has improved the quality of accounting information for investors in the A-share market in China. We analyse investor’s reaction to financial information released pre and post IFRS convergence in China. Multiple regression analysis was employed using data from 309 listed Chinese companies. The findings of this study show that earnings per share, relative to book value of equity, is a stronger explanatory factor of market return in both the pre- and post IFRS convergence periods, suggesting that investors rely heavily upon earnings released by listed companies when making security price decisions in the Chinese stock market. The results also suggest that investors’ reliance on the income statement information for investment decisions becomes greater in the post IFRS convergence period.

Abstract: This study investigates the influence of institutional ownership and audit committees corporate risk disclosures. Focusing on analysing firms’ risk disclosures make in their 2009 annual reports, our s le constitutes a s le of 66 Australian listed firms. We ide institutional shareholders into dedicated-type institutional block shareholders and transient-type institutional block shareholders. We find that while there is no significant relationship between dedicated-type institutional block shareholders and risk disclosure, there is a positive relationship between transient-type institutional block shareholders and risk disclosures. Our result is consistent with a principal that wields limited monitoring resources while achieving high resource dependency over management. We also find a significant and positive relationship between audit committee independence and risk disclosures, showing the positive role played by audit committee in improving the information transparency and reducing information asymmetry in capital market.

Abstract: As a consequence of the development of the Chinese economy, there has been an emergence of “new” stakeholder groups for the Chinese listed firms. New stakeholder groups include creditors, regulatory agencies, private investors, professional associations and environmentalists. With the use of secondary data, a review was undertaken to explore the emergence of these new stakeholder groups and discuss their influence over listed firms in China. The stakeholder typology developed by Mitchell et al (1997) is used to identify stakeholder attributes of each stakeholder group and assess their stakeholder power. The changes of stakeholder power over the years mirror China’s transition from a centrally planned economy to a more market oriented one.
