Abstract: Homeownership is considered both economically and socially beneficial for homeowners. However, in the collective living arrangement, reaching a consensus with regard to the residential environment is difficult. The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that can reduce the conflict among the stakeholders in multi‐owner low‐cost housing in Malaysia. This study tested three hypotheses examining whether the demographic and socio‐economic characteristics of owner‐occupants and occupancy rates affect owner‐occupants' satisfaction with stakeholders' relationships. Data were collected through questionnaires from owner‐occupants of multi‐owner low‐cost settlements in Selangor state. Data on housing characteristics were collected from chairpersons of the respective owners' organisations. The data were treated as parametric, and analysis of variance was conducted. Four factors – number of children in the family, duration of residency, participation in social activities and participation in meetings – were found to affect owners‐occupants' satisfaction with the stakeholders' relationships. The significant effect of occupancy rates was also indicated. The Management Corporations (MCs) should encourage social relationships among residents. To avoid conflict, the costs and benefits of participation must be balanced. Policy makers should take two key aspects seriously: owner‐managed strategy practices by the MCs and high rates of tenant‐residents. A mechanism should be identified for assisting the MCs in housing management and for protecting the benefits of homeownership for owner‐occupants. Past studies on low‐income household settlements examined public housing or low‐income homeowners of single detached dwellings. This study adds to the existing body of knowledge by examining low‐income homeowners in multi‐owner low‐cost settlements.

Abstract: Cleaning is one of the important activities during the operation and maintenance stage to any type of core business. Schools nowadays are looking seriously at the cleaning aspect as they realize the availability of health and environmentally friendly facilities that encourage academic performance and staff welfare. These concerns are due to the conventional cleaning practices and products used to keep the school clean. The cleaning contractors are responsible to understand that chemicals with high levels of volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions and other carcinogens plus dust from poorly filtered vacuums can have a negative impact on the health of students, staff and janitors. Thus, it is a good time for the building managers to make a move to green cleaning practice in school, as a rising number of green cleaning products that are much more effective are available. This study was hence conducted to identify the critical benefits that can be gained through the implementation of green cleaning practice in Malaysian school. Twelve benefits were identified from the literature, and a questionnaire survey that involved green cleaning experts was carried out. Frequency analysis and Importance Index calculation were performed to rank the benefits. The result indicates that “improve indoor air quality (IAQ)” and “provide a safe and healthy environment to occupants and janitors” are the most important benefits of green cleaning practice during operation and maintenance stages in Malaysian school. The findings of this study can provide a significant contribution to the built environment industry. By knowing the benefits that can be gained through green cleaning implementation, efforts can be carried out to explore measures that can be taken to implement the green cleaning practice in Malaysian school or other types of building.

Abstract: Selangor’s growing population and accelerating economic conditions have resulted in the demand for human settlements. As a result, Selangor development has encroached the highland areas and it was constantly hit with inundated landslide disasters. Landslides are now viewed not only as natural occurrences or as the result of design flaws, but as a greater risk to society that must be managed accordingly. Since then, the issue of neighbourhood engagement in local authorities has increased. There are four issues that affect neighbourhood engagement in local authorities, 1) People in urban areas spend more time in their workplaces, 2) Some of planning and development tools, planning standards, and regulations are not clear, 3) Limited community capacity in decision making, and 4) Government behaviour towards residents in highland areas. Improving neighbourhood engagement in local authorities significantly enhances disaster risk reduction of highland developments in Selangor. Local authority as the service provider plays an important role in this issue, especially when it relates to policy decision-making. The aim of this research is to establish neighbourhood engagement framework in local authorities towards disaster risk reduction of highland developments in Selangor as to achieve SDGs 11. To achieve the aim, this review has two (2) objectives: 1) To investigate factors affecting neighbourhood engagement in local authorities towards disaster risk reduction in highland developments and 2) To suggest strategies to improve the neighbourhood engagement in local authorities towards disaster risk reduction in highland developments. The finding of this desk study suggests that even though neighbourhood engagement is exercised by the Local Authorities during the planning stage of highland development, the practice should be continued until after the occupation of the properties to help reduce the risk of landslides and highland disasters.

Abstract: This paper presents the reliability and validity analysis of the data collection instrument used in a larger study scale. A pilot study has been employed to prove the viability of the questionnaire survey and make improvements prior to the actual survey examining the framework of Sustainable Facilities Management (SFM) initiatives for Malaysia’s hotel industry. A survey was conducted among 5-star hotels registered under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Malaysia. A total of 34 respondents were successfully recruited from Klang Valley’s hotel staff. The reliability and validity analyses of this pilot study were conducted using PLS-SEM: SMART-PLS Version 3.3.2. The study’s findings revealed that the surveyed SFM initiatives in the hotel organisations were statistically significant. In addition, the findings indicated that the SFM initiatives positively contributed towards sustainable development goals (SDG) particularly SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 12, and SDG 13. The study’s main implications further confirmed that the instrument used in the pilot study fulfilled the acceptable requirements of the reliability and validity range for the main data collection purpose of the intended study.
