Abstract: According to Van Dijk, there are three dimensions of discourse analysis, namely text, social cognition and social context. This study was focused on the first dimension, text. Joko Widodo’s first presidential English speech on economic issues in front of international audience in CEO Summit in Beijing was one of speeches a lot of people talk about. Some like while some others dislike. This study was intended to analyze the transcript of the speech. This text analysis was based on Van Dijk’s design in which the unit elements of the analysis are ided into three parts: macro-structure, suprastructure and microstructure. The result of the analysis revealed that in macrostructure element, several sentences in the presidential speech were less coherent in term of stating theme. Then, in suprastructure, the scheme of the speech consisted of opening, content and closing. Finally, in the microstrucure, the semantic aspect could be found in setting, detail, intention, presupposition, and normalization.

Abstract: Curriculum is undoubtedly an inseparable part of education. In Indonesia, education curriculum has already undergone several changes. Among others, the newly introduced and implemented one is called Curriculum 2013 (K-13). Involving a “scientific approach”, this curriculum is expected to answer both the needs and the challenges to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. Nevertheless, the implementation of this curriculum gives birth to some pros and cons. The present paper is aimed at providing a picture of challenges, opportunities and teachers’ perception on the use of this curriculum in English teaching. The data were collected through in-depth interview to six English teachers in six pilot schools in Bogor and L ung. The analysis shows that most teachers accepted the curriculum. However, according to them, the curriculum should be evaluated and further developed.

Abstract: This study aims to describe the self-regulated learning strategy of students of the Arabic Language Education Program at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin in online Arabic lectures during the pandemic. This study used a qualitative method with an exploratory investigative approach to identify 100 students' self-regulated learning strategies to support learning Arabic from a distance. This study examines 4 (four) indicators in self-regulated learning strategies, namely Goal Setting, Environment Structuring, Task Strategies, and Time Management. The results showed that one of the goal-setting strategies, where students hope to master the elements of Arabic and have Arabic language skills, got the highest average score of 5.68 out of 6. While the time management, in which students benefitted from online learning as it is flexible in determining additional study time, got the lowest average score of 3.95 out of a scale of 6. This value still shows a positive trend which can be interpreted that those students have carried out self-regulated learning strategies well in online Arabic lectures

Abstract: English is the most widely taught and learned language in the world. Within the broader literatures on the worldwide spread and dominance of English as a key skill for 21st century education, the use of English(es) and English Language Teaching (ELT) in the context of schooling in Asian countries represent an important research direction. Our paper contributes to these debates by exploring the problem of English language teachers’ beliefs about their pedagogical practices in Indonesian pesantren schools. The system of religious pesantren schools provides a unique research context to examine teacher practice in classrooms where English is not assigned the assumed de facto status of a ‘global lingua franca’. In engaging a Bourdieusian lens, this paper explores teachers’ perceptions of the (lack of) symbolic and linguistic capital of English language learning in pesantren, the emergent tensions, and how these frame teacher beliefs and practice. In so doing, this paper aims to contribute to the broader debates in the field that seek to critically analyse and reframe the hegemonic status of English as a global educational commodity of political-economic power.

Abstract: Indonesia is well-known for its ersity of ethnicity, language, religion and tradition. This gives birth to the emergence of local wisdom in every region in this country. Local wisdom is certainly very meaningful because it is a part of characteristic of the nation. Unfortunately, many today’s young people are not familiar, even do not know, with their local wisdoms. This should be paid more attention since local wisdom is one of the self-identity of the nation. One of strategies to preserve and inherit local wisdom is by integrating it into all lessons, including foreign language, taught at school. Local wisdom needs to be in instructional activities of foreign language teaching, even though they need to learn foreign languages, they would not lose their real identity. The application of this concept is not only to equip the students with linguistic competence but also to provide them with cultural competence. This paper discusses the importance, the reason and the practical ways of integrating local wisdom in foreign language teaching for Indonesian students. It is concluded that the integration of local wisdom is very essential and it could be executed by including the local wisdom values into the materials, allocated time for discussion on local wisdom, classroom activities and the process of teaching linguistic skill.

Abstract: Despite the prevalence of English-only instruction in foreign language classrooms, many affirm the use of erse linguistic repertoires particularly in linguistically- erse society contexts where multilingual learners tend to naturally function their linguistic repertoires at daily basis (Canagarajah, 2011). This study aimed to explore teachers’ attitude toward the translanguaging approach in English language teaching (ELT) practices in pesantren schools and how it is used in the learning process. Six-phase thematic analysis was used as its qualitative research method and data were generated via in-depth semi-structured interviews to English teachers in pesantren-based schools in L ung province. The findings showed that teachers had positive attitude toward translanguaging, as it allows them to take benefits of students’ languages other than English in English classroom. They found translanguaging helpful to explain, elaborate, and reinforce the meaning of learning materials as well as to motivate students and to create enjoyable learning atmosphere. In addition, the accommodation of knowledge or skills of other languages serves as a way to integrate the local and contextual values and culture of pesantren schools into English classroom. Some practical pedagogical implications for are discussed.

For one decade, Ministry of Education in Indonesia has administered National Examination (NE) as the standardized test for passing grade requirement. In spite of its good aim, NE has become one of controversial issues among educators, students and even parents. Some say yes while some others say no. This paper was mainly attempted to display some impacts, not all, of NE toward the test takers, the students. A qualitative research was employed where the data taken from observation and questionnaires to 20 students. The result of the study showed that most of the students felt unconfident with their score in National Examination due to the fact that their English competence was considered low. However, the difficulty of NE did not significantly affect their studying English language. In other words, the washback of NE on their study was negative.

Abstract: This research was aimed at analyzing the type of English skills needed by the students of Islamic Banking (Perbankan Syariah) in IAIN Metro and figuring out the materials relevant to their needs. This was a qualitative study involving 25 students and 20 alumni who were working or had ever worked in the banks or BMTs. The data were obtained by employing interviews, questionnaires, documentation, and then analyzed by using Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that most of the students have less skill in English. However, the language skill that is needed at most by the students is speaking skill as the communicative skill and vocabulary as the language skill. It is also discovered that there are some problems, such as limited references, lack of supporting facilities, and learning duration that are encountered by both lecturers and the students. Then, referring to their needs, the materials do not yet accommodate the content focus in which the students can learn English related to banking issues. This research recommends that the syllabus should be revised and English should be taught in an integrative approach.
