Global seed dormancy patterns are driven by macroclimate but not fire regime

Abstract: Seed dormancy maximizes plant recruitment in habitats with variation in environmental suitability for seedling establishment. Yet, we still lack a comprehensive synthesis of the macroecological drivers of nondormancy and the different classes of seed dormancy: physiological dormancy, morphophysiological dormancy and physical dormancy. We examined current geographic patterns and environmental correlates of global seed dormancy variation. Combining the most updated data set on seed dormancy classes for 10 000 species with 4 million georeferenced species occurrences covering all of the world's biomes, we test how this distribution is driven by climate and fire regime. Seed dormancy is prevalent in seasonally cold and dry climates. Physiological dormancy occurs in relatively dry climates with high temperature seasonality (e.g. temperate grasslands). Morphophysiological dormancy is more common in forest‐dominated, cold biomes with comparatively high and evenly distributed precipitation. Physical dormancy is associated with dry climates with strong seasonal temperature and precipitation fluctuations (e.g. deserts and savannas). Nondormancy is associated with stable, warm and wetter climates (e.g. tropical rain forest). Pyroclimate had no significant effect on the distribution of seed dormancy. The environmental drivers considered in this study had a comparatively low predictive power, suggesting that macroclimate is just one of several global drivers of seed dormancy.

Abstract: Good policy can only be built and implemented using sound advice, and a clear understanding of risk. Scientific advice will often be qualified by the extent of research and knowledge, and uncertainties about the current and future state of the environment. Bodies tasked with protecting the Antarctic environment are required to make decisions based on the best available advice. To not take decisions in the absence of certainty is contrary to clear obligations to protect the Antarctic environment contained in the instruments of the Antarctic Treaty System. The risk of foreclosing future options to protect the environment by indecision is as great, if not greater, than making decisions with incomplete advice, and then actively managing that decision into the future. This “Perspective” explores the relationship between science and policy in the context of the Conference on Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean held in 2018—it is a perspective from the view of a policy-maker and end user of scientific assessment and advice.

Comparison of the Demography of Populations of Rattus-Fuscipes Living in Cool Temperate Rain-Forests and Dry Sclerophyll Forests

Abstract: Capture-mark-recapture and removal-trapping methods were used to monitor population parameters of Rattus fuscipes in cool temperate rainforest and dry sclerophyll forest. Population sizes, breeding, sex ratios, age structure, turnover, growth and condition were compared. Although significantly more rats were captured in the beech than in the sclerophyll forests, other demographic parameters were similar between the different populations. Numbers were highest in late summer and autumn, declined over winter and increased during spring and summer. Superimposed on this cycle, numbers differed between years far fewer rats were present in the autumn of 1979 than in those of 1978 or 1980. The breeding season lasted from late spring to mid-autumn, and there were no apparent differences between the two habitats in breeding success, growth rates or condition, or in changes in the age-structure of populations with time. The young entered the population in summer and autumn and grew to adults through the winter and spring the number of adults from the previous breeding season fell during the winter, and few survived to a second breeding season.

Abstract: Replicated s ling regimes were used to assess the numbers of Rattus fuscipes in cool temperate rainforests and dry sclerophyll forests, on Gloucester Tops, N.S.W. R. fuscipes was significantly more abundant in the rainforest habitat than in the sclerophyll habitat, and this result was consistent under a number of different s ling regimes. Numbers changed significantly between April 1978 and March 1980, but the patterns of change were similar in each habitat. Fire and logging contributed to the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the Gloucester Tops, and the cool temperate rainforests appeared to be more protected from disturbance than the dry sclerophyll forests. The cool temperate rainforests may be important refuges for populations of R. fuscipes, and may provide recruits for areas of sclerophyll forest the populations of which have been reduced by logging or fire.
