Conflicts, battlefields, indigenous peoples and tourism : addressing dissonant heritage in warfare tourism in Australia and North America in the twenty-first century

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the omission of Indigenous narratives in battlefields and sites of conflicts while also highlighting how certain battlefields and sites of conflicts have attempted to address dissonant heritage by ersifying interpretation strategies and implementing elements of collaborative management approaches, thereby addressing Indigenous erasure. The study uses a content analysis, field studies and case studies to examine dissonant heritage in warfare tourism sites involving Indigenous peoples in Australia and North America. The content analysis reveals that aboriginal erasure is still prevalent within the literature on warfare and battlefield tourism. However, the case studies suggest that dissonant heritage in warfare tourism is being addressed through collaborative management strategies and culturally sensitive interpretation strategies. The content analysis is limited to tourism journals. The case studies highlight sites that are using adaptive management and integrating Indigenous peoples. The study of dissonant heritage and warfare tourism, while relatively young, is beginning to address aboriginal erasure and cultural dissonance this study is a contribution to this area of research. Addressing the impacts of aboriginal erasure and heritage dissonance in colonial settings heals the hurts of the past, while empowering communities. It also provides Indigenous communities with opportunities to ersify current tourism products. This is a collaborative international paper involving Indigenous and non‐Indigenous scholars from Australia, Canada, and the USA.

Developing a Collaborative Approach to Standpoint in Indigenous Australian Research

Abstract: Abstract The notion of Indigenous epistemologies and “ways of knowing” continues to be undervalued within various academic disciplines, particularly those who continue to draw upon “scientific” approaches that colonise Indigenous peoples today. This paper will examine the politics of contested knowledge from the perspective of three Indigenous researchers who work within Yunggorendi First Nations Centre for Higher Education and Research at Flinders University in South Australia. In particular, the authors outline a collective process that has emerged from conversations regarding their research projects and responding to what Ladson-Billings and Donnor (2008, p. 371) refer to as the “call”. In developing an Indigenous standpoint specific to their own disciplines and their research context, the authors demonstrate how these collective conversations between each other and their communities in which they work have informed their research practices and provided a common framework which underpins their research methodologies.

Aboriginal serrated and perforated shell artefacts from the Murray River, South Australia

Abstract: This article describes three freshwater mussel shell artefacts recently documented for the Murray River in South Australia. These finds more than double the known ex les of such artefacts from this region. Two of the modified shells are perforated, with the other serrated. The finely serrated item is a rare artefact and we have not located any similar published ex les in Australia, although international correlates exist. The function/s and cultural significance of the objects are also considered in this paper. Hypotheses for the perforated finds include ornamentation, tool stringing and fibre scraping. Ornamentation, idle tinkering and food utensil use are considered as possible intended functions for the serrated artefact. Given the age range of the objects reported here (c. 6181–517 cal BP), together with other finds in the Murray Darling Basin, we tentatively suggest that shells have been a material resource used continually in this region for a range of purposes. However, as argued by other researchers, we concur that there has probably been infrequent identification and reporting of such shell artefacts. This is considered particularly likely given that our finds were recovered from relatively small scale excavation/coring and surface s ling efforts. As such, this paper attempts to raise awareness of this form of material culture in archaeological sequences.

Indigenous views on the future of public archaeology in Australia

Abstract: This paper was written in response to a request by the editors of the AP: Online Journal of Public Archaeology, Jaime Almansa Sánchez and Elena Papagiannopoulou, for Claire Smith to write on the future of public archaeology in Australia. In Australia, public archaeology focusses on high profile colonial sites such as The Rocks in Sydney (Karskens 1999) and Port Arthur in Tasmania (Steele et al. 2007 Frew 2012), tourism (e.g. Cole and Wallis 2019) or enhancing school curricula (Nichols et al. 2005 Owens and Steele 2005). However, given her decades-long relationships with Jawoyn and Ngadjuri people (Smith 1999 Smith et al. 2016 Smith et al. 2020), Claire Smith decided that a useful way of approaching this topic would be to obtain Indigenous views on the subject. Accordingly, she contacted the Aboriginal co-authors of this article and invited them to co-author the paper. The possibility to write in free form was a boon. The ‘conversation’ format we settled on was designed to facilitate the voices of in iduals, to present a range of Indigenous views, to allow people to express their views frankly, and to deal with the constraints of people being located in different parts of Australia as well as occasional lock-downs due to COVID-19. We decided on five topics/questions that would be the basis of the conversation. Each Aboriginal author gave their views either by email or by phone. These views were interwoven into a ‘conversation’. The language has been edited lightly for clarity and to simulate a real-life conversation. The final text was approved by all authors.

Abstract: Ian McNiven recently argued that interpretive theoretical frameworks shaped by Indigenous worldviews offer the potential to enrich archaeological understandings of the past and inform archaeological practice in the present. In this chapter, the authors apply one of the core theoretical concepts McNiven identified—Indigenous experiences of encountering the past—to their work with Ngarrindjeri, Jawoyn, and Yanyuwa Aboriginal people. Through the lens of encountering the past, they focus on the notions of living landscapes, revelation by the ancestors, and ancestral remains as people, not objects. All three are underpinned by the concept of ancestors having and exerting agency that shapes how the ‘archaeological record’ is interpreted. In doing so, they are also contributing to research movements that seek to obtain interpretations of the past that are not only more closely aligned to the knowledge systems of the people who created the archaeological material and cultural landscapes but also grounded in emotional connections to people, place, and objects.

Unearthing South Australia’s Oldest Known Shipwreck: The Bark South Australian (1837)

Abstract: In early 2018, a collaborative team composed of maritime archaeologists, museum specialists, and volunteers from the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, South Australian Maritime Museum, Silentworld Foundation, Australian National Maritime Museum, MaP Fund, and Flinders University surveyed for and located the shipwreck site of the bark South Australian . Lost at Rosetta Harbor (at the western end of modern-day Encounter Bay) in December 1837, South Australian is South Australia’s oldest documented shipwreck. Its significance also derives from its use as one of the earliest immigration ships to ferry European settlers to the colony of South Australia, as well as careers as a postal packet and “cutting-in” vessel for shore-based whaling activities. South Australian ’s historical background is addressed, as are efforts to locate and confirm the identity of its wreck site via archaeological investigation.
