Funded Activity Summary

Revealing the mechanisms of lithium ion battery by In-Situ transmission electron microscopy. Lithium ion batteries play a key role in our current life, from portable electronics to electric vehicles. However the performance of lithium batteries, especially their short life cycle and low capacity, still requires improvement based on a clear understanding of the battery mechanism. Using the in-situ transmission electron microscopy technology, this project will study the lithium ion intercalation process of a model battery inside transmission electron microscope. The lithium ion transportation and the microstructure evolution of electrode materials will be directly imaged at the atomic scale in real time. This investigation will facilitate the improvement of current batteries and also the exploration of new battery materials.
